Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern University Sharks (20-4; 3-0) smashed four home runs against the Bridgeport Purple Knights (3-10), winning by a score of 12-2.
Gilberto Torres (Fr., Miami, Fla.) picked up the win, tossing two innings and not allowing a hit for his second win of the season.
The Sharks got right to work in the bottom of the first inning, earning one run on a double down the right field line off of the bat of
Justin Garcia (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.), scoring
Mario Urdaneta (Sr., Ocala, Fla.). After Bridgeport tied the game in the top of the second inning, NSU regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning, thanks to a
Yandy Viera (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) single through the right side, scoring
Alexander Fernandez (Sr., Davie, Fla.).
Bridgeport punched right back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring one run on an interesting play. The Purple Knights had the bases loaded with no outs when a ground ball hit to
Dylan Woods (So., New Symrna Beach, Fla.) at shortstop was fielding and thrown to second for the first out, then thrown to third, tagging the runner that rounded third to far for the second out. The runner from third scored, but the Sharks escaped what could've been a big inning for Bridgeport.
From then on, the NSU offense took care of business, scoring 11 runs, including four home runs.
Antonio Rodriguez (Jr., Coral Gables, Fla.) hit the first home run, giving the Sharks a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Woods then singled, driving in
Kavan Thompson (Jr., Merritt Island, Fla.).
Roche Woodard (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) scored the next run, crossing the plate on a wild pitch, followed by Woods, also scoring on a wild pitch. Fernandez then launched his first home run of the game over the left field fence, a three-run bomb to give the Sharks an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Urdaneta smashed a line drive over the right field fence for a three-run home run, giving NSU an 11-2 lead. The Sharks went back-to-back, as Fernandez crushed his second home run of the game to dead centerfield, moving the score to 12-2. Urdaneta added one more RBI to his four RBI night in the bottom of the eighth inning, sending a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Thompson.
