Softball Faces Albany State Tuesday

Sharks compete in doubleheader at 5 p.m.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (10-14) will take on the Albany State Golden Rams Tuesday in a midweek doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.

NSU lost its last weekend series to Saint Leo, 2-1, but are coming off a week in which the Sharks went 3-2, snapping a 10 game losing streak. The week started off with a doubleheader win against old Sun Conference rivals, the St. Thomas Bobcats. The Sharks won the first game in six innings, 9-1, and took the second game, 7-5. Rebecca Thornton (So., Lodi, Calif.) shined on both sides of the game, with six RBI along with a win and a save in the circle.

The Sharks carried that momentum into their Shark Night and took a 3-1 win over the Saint Leo Lions on Friday in front of a packed complex. The Sharks were led by a 3-for-3 performance from Katrina Ammons (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.), who also had two crucial RBI. In the circle, Thornton picked up the victory and held Saint Leo to one run and six hits, striking out three batters. After a run in the first, Thornton blanked the Lions for six straight frames.

However, the Sharks dropped the series due to a rough offensive Saturday doubleheader. NSU could not score a run over the course of 14 innings, losing the first game, 1-0, and the second, 4-0.

NSU will look to jump back into the win column Tuesday against the Golden Rams. Albany State enters the week with wins over Georgia Southwestern and Benedict, but a tough schedule put them in place to lost to Georgia College, Valdosta State and Florida Tech. Despite those losses, Albany State is a team that has seen some of the top teams in the South Region and will be prepared for the Sharks on Tuesday.

The Sharks are 7-1 against Albany State all time. The last time the Sharks faced Albany State, NSU took both games of a doubleheader on March 29, 2013. The Sharks won game one in five innings, 8-0, and game two, 5-2.
