No. 3 NSU Drops the Series Finale Against No. 20 Lynn

Fernandez hits his ninth home run of the year in the loss.

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University Sharks (25-6, 7-2 SSC) fell to the Lynn University Fighting Knights (25-7, 8-4 SSC) in Sunday's rubber match, losing by a score of 9-6. Alex Mateo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) dropped his record to 5-1, losing for the first time this season.

Lynn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, hitting their first home run of the day over the right centerfield fence in the bottom of the first inning. The Sharks responded in the top of the second inning, tying the game on a Andres Visbal (So., Miami, Fla.) solo home run, his first home run of the year.

The Fighting Knights then took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting their second home run of the day, a two-run home run to right centerfield. NSU cut the Lynn lead to one run, scoring a run of its own on a RBI walk from Visbal with the bases loaded, scoring Mario Urdaneta (Sr., Ocala, Fla.). Lynn fought right back, chasing the Sharks' starting pitcher, Mateo, out of the game and proceeding to score two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, pushing their lead to 5-2.

Continuing the back and forth affair, NSU scored two runs in the top of the six inning on a opposite-field two-run home run off of the bat of Alexander Fernandez (Sr., Davie, Fla.), his ninth of the year. Unable to silence the Fighting Knights' offense, Raftery allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Lynn took a 7-4 lead. NSU fired right back in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on a two-RBI double from Roche Woodard (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) to make the score 7-6.

Lynn added an insurance run in each of the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to increase their lead to 9-6. Lynn's Billy Mendek held the Sharks' offense to no runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings, as the Fighting Knights took the series 2-1.

NSU will be back in action Monday night against Palm Beach Atlantic. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Be sure to tune in to the game, following the links on the schedule page.
