Sharks Softball Falls in Doubleheader Against Sailfish

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (8-10) dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (12-10) on Wednesday night at Simpson Field. The Sharks fell in the first game 8-0 in six innings and despite a late surge, dropped the nightcap 5-1.
 
Lorena Spalding (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate going 3-for-6 on the night with a trio of singles. Both Katrina Ammons (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Rebecca Thornton (So., Lodi, Calif.) each added a pair of hits over the two games combined.
 
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Sailfish added a pair of runs in both the second and third innings. to take a 4-0 lead. Theresa Butler doubled in PBA's first run in the second, while Stephanie Garrels singled in the second. In the third, and RBI single and a fielder's choice resulted in the next two Sailfish runs.
 
The Sailfish continued to build on their lead with a three-run fourth inning. Shelby Wood started the scoring with a 2 RBI double. Corrie Boggess followed with a second straight RBI double to left field that plated Wood for PBA's third run and a 7-0 lead. The Sharks managed to contain PBA in the fifth, but Brianna Rano closed out the game for the Sailfish driving in her third run of the game with an RBI double in the sixth to close it out for the 8-0 win.
 
Boggess tossed a six-inning shutout striking out eight for PBA while Megan Lee (Sr., Miami, Fla.) gave up eight runs, two unearned on 14 hits.
 
In the nightcap, the Sharks put together a six-hit performance, but was unable to take advantage of a late seventh inning opportunity leaving two on base after a bases loaded situation. The Sailfish took an early 1-0 lead in the second when Rachel Hill plated the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly to center field. PBA added two more in the fourth on when Butler doubled in a pair of runs and later extended their lead to 5-0 with a two run fifth.
 
After a scoreless sixth, the Sharks tried to rally loading the bases. After Ammons popped up to second base, Carly Comito (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) walked, Thornton followed with a single and Shelby Cogan (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) drew a walk to load the bases. Taylor Rotz (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) came in to pinch hit for Angilica Montalvo (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and reached on a fielder's choice which drove in the Sharks first run of the series. Unfortunately her grounder was aimed directly at third base which resulted in the Sharks' second out of the inning and only two runners. Another sharply hit ball to third ended the inning for NSU as the Sharks fell 5-1.
 
Rachel Hill earned the win for PBA going the full seven innings allowing only six hits, while Thornton and Comito combined for six innings of work in the loss.
 
The Sharks will return to action on Friday, March 6 at 6 pm hosting Eckerd in a three-game Sunshine State Conference series.
