Box Score 2 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern University softball team (8-13, 0-6 SSC) dropped another pair of Sunshine State Conference games to the Eckerd Tritons (23-2, 6-0 SSC) on Saturday at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. The Sharks fell in the first game 8-4, and dropped the nightcap 3-0.
Saturday's series started at the scheduled time, but it soon was halted with the onslaught of rains coming in off the coast. Eckerd had already scored a pair of runs to start the first inning to take 2-0 lead, but the Sharks managed to come back and tie it before the extended rain delay. Katrina Ammons (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) put the Sharks on the board with an RBI ground out and then Dakota Villella (So., Hollywood, Fla.) scored on a passed ball to tie it 2-2.
After the 3 hour and 14 minute rain delay, play resumed in the bottom of the first with runners at second and third and Katey Blummer (So., Naples, Fla.) at the plate with two strikes. She hit a sharply hit ball to the Triton shortstop, who botched the play, which allowed the runners to score giving NSU a 4-2 lead. The second inning was scoreless, but in the top of the third Eckerd's Kara Oberer hit a two-run home run to tie the game, 4-4. The Tritons took a one-run lead in the sixth when Brittany Mitchell singled in the go ahead run. Eckerd plated three more runs in the seventh for the final score 8-4.
Erin Dixson (8-0) earned the win for Eckerd allowing four runs, just one earned, on six hits. Meagan Lee (Sr., Miami, Fla.) fell to 0-3 on the season in the loss giving up eight runs on nine hits and struck out four.
In an attempt to beat more oncoming weather, there was a quick turnaround between the two games to finish the series. The game sped along at a quick rate finishing in 1:37 from start to finish. Eckerd scored early in the second when Dixson hit a two-run homer to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead. The next three innings remained scoreless until the Dixson singled in Eckerd's third run of the game which led to the final score, 3-0.
Amber Hay (13-2) tossed the five-hit shutout for Eckerd striking out four. NSU's Rebecca Thornton (So., Lodi, Calif.) suffered her fifth loss of the season giving up three runs on six hits.
The Sharks will return to action on March 12, 2015 when they travel to Miami, Fla. to face St. Thomas in a non-conference doubleheader at 6 pm.
