Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team fell in their series opener to Lynn on Thursday night, as the Fighting Knights plated five in the fourth inning in a 6-1 victory at the A.D. Griffin Sports Complex.
The Sharks (13-16, 1-9 SSC) and Fighting Knights (18-14, 8-5 SSC) were scoreless through the first three innings, combining for just five hits. Lynn broke through with six straight one-out hits in the fourth, with four singles preceding the biggest knock of the game, a bases-clearing three-run triple by Sara Vazquez.
The bottom of that same inning saw the only Shark run, set up by
Katrina Ammons' (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) second hit of the game, a single to center. Pinch-runner
Courtney Bridge (So., Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) advanced to second on a groundout and then came around to score on a two-out single by
Maegan Lee (Sr., Miami).
Lynn tacked on another run in the fifth to regain the five-run lead, on an inside-the-park home run to right by Jasmine Campos. Neither team was able to dent the scoreboard over the last two and a half innings, though the Sharks had runners on base in each of their last three turns.
Both Ammons and Lee each had two hits for NSU, with
Brenisha Bannister (Fr., Plantation, Fla.) adding one as well.
Rebecca Thornton (So., Lodi, Calif.) pitched extremely efficiently, as she threw 74 of her 95 pitches for strikes, and with the exception of the fourth, only gave up five hits and a run to her Lynn opposition.
These two teams are right back at it on Friday afternoon for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
