Box Score 2 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (20-25) split a doubleheader against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (33-22) Friday at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. The Sharks won game one in 10 innings, 6-5, on a walkoff double before dropping the season finale, 8-1. The doubleheader served as senior night, with six students competing in their final game for NSU.
GAME ONEThe Sharks won a marathon game in dramatic fashion, with senior
Krista Colburn (Meade, Colo.) recording a walkoff double to complete a comeback victory in the 10th inning. Overall, Colburn went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while fellow senior
Katrina Ammons (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Rebecca Thornton (So., Lodi, Calif.) recorded her final win of the season, finishing the year with 15 wins and a 2.20 ERA over 181.2 innings pitched.
The Sharks faced a tough pitching staff from Palm Beach Atlantic and did not crack game one starter, Rachel Hill, until the seventh inning. Leading into the seventh, NSU only recorded six hits and were blanked sixth straight times. Meanwhile, PBA posted a pair of runs in the third inning and padded their lead with a run in the fourth.
The Sharks entered the seventh in need of a comeback. After a line out to start the frame,
Haley Gonzales (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior Courtney Bridge (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) reached base on a walk and an error. With runners on the corners,
Brenisha Bannister (Fr., Plantation, Fla.) hit a RBI single through the left side that broke the shutout by scoring Gonzales.
Dakota Villella (So., Hollywood, Fla.) proceeded to move the two runners over to scoring position, but posted a second out on the board.
The game was on the line with Ammons up to bat and two speedy runners on base. Ammons came through in the clutch with a blooper to right field to drive in both runs and tie the game. Senior
Maegan Lee (Miami, Fla.) followed up with a single to right again, but a strong throw beat Ammons to third base on a bang-bang play.
While the Sharks offense came through, Thornton had found her groove. She pitched five straight shutout innings, including perfect sides from the sixth through the ninth inning. Tied at 3-3 in the 10th, the Sailfish struck again with a pair of runs from the top of their lineup. With their backs to the wall, the Sharks made their second and game-winning comeback.
Ammons led off the bottom of the 10th with a double to right field and was pinch run by
Angilica Montalvo (Fr., Miami, Fla.). The freshman was plated by Thornton on a single up the middle, followed by an identical result from senior
Shelby Cogan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). With the tying run at first, Colburn came up to bat looking to play the hero. Colburn mashed a deep ball into the right centerfield gap, easily scoring the two base runners and emptying the dugout.
Following the game, seniors Bridge, Lee, Colburn, Cogan and Ammons were joined by team manager Tika Torres to be honored by the softball team and the entire athletic department for their dedication and hard work over their careers.
GAME TWOThe Sharks would split the doubleheader after dropping game two, 8-1. NSU would be shut down by PBA's Corrie Boggess, who held NSU to two hits while striking out 11. On the other end, Lee gave up the loss despite only allowing four earned runs while striking out four.
PBA came out of the gate with fire, scoring four runs in the first inning to take a lead they would not give up. NSU was held hitless in the first three innings before breaking the shutout in the fourth. Ammons drew a one-out walk to start the rally and was once again pinch run for by Montalvo. After a Lee walk, Colburn hit another crucial single through the left side to score Montalvo, earning her team's only RBI of the game. With the tying run at the plate, NSU struck out twice to strand a pair.
After Lee allowed two hits in innings 2-4, PBA took advantage of costly errors and scored in every remaining frame. The Sailfish scored one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and another in the seventh.
Meanwhile, NSU's offense went stagnant and only recorded one more hit, a leadoff single up the middle from Villella in the sixth. Cogan reached base on a walk in the seventh, but NSU could not move a runner into scoring position before the end of the game.
