FT. PIERCE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming teams traveled north to Ft. Pierce to face a highly touted Indian River program and came out victorious on Friday afternoon. The men took the dual meet win by a score of 163-99, while the women's team won by a score of 174-88.
Out of the 28 events schedule two swim, the Sharks combined to win 26 and posted another six provisional qualifying times in the process. Emma Wahstrom led the way with two provisional qualifying times. Although her qualifying in the 500 freestyle to open the season three weeks earlier was her best, she won the 500 free with a time of 5:30.87. She went on to win the 100-yard backstroke event as well with a provisional time of 57.23.
Franco Lupoli added another provisional qualifying time in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:30.04, while
Victor Tarin provisionally qualified in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:40.95, his first provisional cut this season.
Thiago Sickert added another in the 100-yard butterfly posting a winning time of 49.80 and men's A-relay provisionally qualified win the 200-freestyle relay with a top time of 1:22.82.
Both the men's and women's A-relays were winners in the 400-yard medley relay events. The women took the top spot at 3:54.62, while the men were victorious with a time of 3:21.91.
On the women's side, several took home wins in multiple events.
Courtney DeVeny won three securing wins in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.90), 200-yard backstroke (2:08.68) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.42).
Brooke Munion secured top times in the 100-yard freestyle (53.43) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.20) events, while
Malin Westman won both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 1:50.58 and 2:22.73 respectively.
Aside from their provisional qualifying times, both Lupoli and Sickert finished off the day with a pair of wins. Lupoli added a win in the 500 free (4:41.50) and Sickert finished first in the 100-yard backstroke at 50.61.
Anton Lobanov added two wins in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 55.68 and 2:07.26 respectively as did
Till Barthel who won both the 50 free (20.96) and 100 free (46.46) events.
Marco Aldabe finished off the multiple event winners with top times in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.34) and 200-yard individual medley (1:54.24) events.
Single event victories went to the women's side with
Madison Yelle taking top times in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle (10:37.05), Alina Schulhoffer finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.03) and
Sydney Panzarino winning the 50 free with a top time of 24.57.
The Sharks will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Miami for tri-meet between NSU, Florida International and Indian River for a meet beginning at 5 p.m.
