FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Facing the reigning Sunshine State Conference Tournament champions, 14
th-ranked Nova Southeastern can all but unseat Barry from atop its SSC throne when both clubs meet this Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
The Buccaneers enter the midweek showdown with a solid 3-2 record in the league, yet already trail conference leader Rollins by five points and the Sharks by four with two additional losses as well. Compound another defeat at the NSU Soccer Complex tomorrow and the Bucs will be facing quite the uphill battle to repeat.
New head coach Sarah Dacey took over the reins of a Barry program that dropped just one conference contest in the last three seasons combined. However, that two-loss mark was equaled in just three SSC matches following defeats to Florida Tech and Saint Leo in September.
Thanks to the play of offensive standouts Molly Sharpe and Carissa Sanchez, though, Barry has turned things around with three straight wins by a combined 9-4 margin. Together, the sophomores have each registered a team-high 11 points this season, more than double any other player on the Barry roster. Sharpe has recorded two of her team-high four goals in the Bucs' previous two matches, providing the difference in each of the wins over Florida Southern and Tampa to help Barry climb back into the mix in the SSC.
Despite their current eight-game unbeaten streak, the Sharks will have no time to rest even after passing back-to-back tests a week ago versus the league's upper echelon in Florida Tech and Rollins.
A rapid start that included a pair of scores within the opening seven minutes carried the Sharks to a comfortable 2-0 victory versus the Panthers last Wednesday before
Emma Heikkila converted her fourth goal of the season in the 60
th minute to force a notable double overtime draw at then-No. 8 Rollins.
After earning SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, keeper
Ida Norstrom will look to continue her impressive run at the NSU Soccer Complex, where the Sharks are 6-0-1 this season. Through five starts in 2016, the freshman has yet to surrender a single goal to opponents through 425 minutes, a key reason why the freshman currently leads the league in goals-against average (0.602).
