MIAMI – The Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming teams went south to participate in the FIU Tri-Meet on Friday evening in Miami. The men's team emerged victorious in a dual against Indian River while the women's team split falling to Florida International, but picked up the win against Indian River in the tri-meet.
With only the men's teams from NSU and IRSC competing, the men's team won their second-straight dual over the Pioneers in consecutive weeks. This time the final score was 161-127. On the women's side, NSU, FIU and IRSC each competed against each other in head-to-head competition. The Sharks defeated the Pioneers 190-96, but fell to No. 27 FIU 159-121. The Panthers also defeated IRSC 207-82.
For the meet, NSU swimmers came out with another seven NCAA provisional qualifying times.
Malin Westman led with two winning the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with qualifying times of 1:04.91 and 2:17.91 respectively.
Emma Wahlstrom qualified again in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:52.36, while
Victor Tarin picked up a provisional qualifying time in the same event for the men.
Courtney DeVeny won the 400 individual medley with a provisional time of 4:28.07 and the NSU women's A-relay (
Alina Schulhofer,
Sydney Panzarino,
Brooke Munion and Wahlstrom) provisionally qualified for the first time this season in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:30.84.
Additional wins from the NSU women came from
Caroline Oster in the women's 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.96 and Panzarino winning the women's 50-freestyle at 24.22. Other notable performances from the women's A-relay (Wahlstrom, Westman, DeVeny, Panzarino) finished second in the 200-medley relay,
Madison Yelle finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:36.11, Schulhofer finished second in the 100-free at 53.52 and
Georgina Allin finished third in the women's 500-free.
On the men's side, NSU's A-relay (
Marco Aldabe,
Anton Lobanov, Sickert and
Till Barthel secured the win in the men's 200-yard medley relay,
Franco Lupoli, Eddie Zacka,
Andrew Pittman and
Blake Woodrow took the top four spots in the men's 1000-yard freestyle, Aldabe won the 100-backstroke at 51.14 and the 200 backstroke at 1:51.54. Lobanov took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.73, Barthel won the 50-free at 20.94, Lupoli won the men's 500-free, while Aldabe,
Stephen Klein and
Thomas Rutherford took the top three spots respectively in the men's 400-yard individual medley. NSU's A-relay in the 400-freestyle relay (Sicker, Barthel, Lupoli and Tarin) combined for a winning time of 3:04.79.
The Sharks women's team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. hosting the Lynn Fighting Knights women's team at the NSU Aquatic Complex, while both teams will travel to Tampa on Saturday, Nov. 19 for a dual meet at the University of Tampa at 11 a.m.
