FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern and Barry played to a scoreless draw in the regular season back on October 19, but expect the intensity to be ramped up just a few more notches this time around when both programs face off in the second Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinal Friday at 7 p.m. ET in Saint Leo, Florida.
Thanks to the effort of freshman forward
Hannah Christophe, the Sharks wrapped up league play with a momentous 3-1 victory on the road at Lynn last Friday. Christophe's second hat trick of the season clinched the No. 2 seed in the tournament for Nova Southeastern, granting the Sharks an opening-round bye and automatic berth into the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Now with 10 goals this season, eight in SSC action, Christophe trails only Arielle Kabangu of Saint Leo for second-most in the conference. The Brampton, Ontario native has also become just the third freshman in program history to reach the double-digit mark in a single season, and first overall in the last 10 years.
A similar offensive performance will be needed from Christophe and the Sharks on Friday as well after Barry kept Nova Southeastern off the scoreboard in the clubs' previous meeting, one of only three teams do so thus far in 2016. Head coach
John Constable's group outshot the Buccaneers by a wide 16-4 margin in the second half and overtime back in October, but Barry managed to hang on for the point following seven saves by 2015 First Team All-SSC keeper Paula Forero.
Since its clash with the Sharks, Barry has been on quite the roll, reeling off four straight wins by a combined 8-0 mark. The Bucs cruised to a 4-0 triumph over 25
th-ranked Rollins this past Saturday, and advanced to Friday's semifinal following another strong performance in a 1-0 victory versus Florida Tech at home Tuesday night. Senior Rayah Seckler provided the game-winner in the 42
nd minute on an assist from Amanda Traynor, helping the Barry remain unbeaten at home this season with a record of 7-0-1.
Facing competition away from Buccaneer Field has caused a few more problems, though, as the Bucs have compiled a 3-2-1 record in road and neutral-site contests including a 2-1 loss in double overtime against Saint Leo the last time they visited University Field.
The winner of Friday's second semifinal will face the winner of the day's opening matchup between the top-seeded Lions and fourth-seeded Rollins.
Ticket prices for single-game and doubleheader action are $8 for adults and $5 for youth (age 13-college) and seniors. Admission is free for all SSC institution students with proper identification and children ages 12 and under.
