Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball, Page and Goodrick Torch the Nets in Win over No. 12 Barry

Page sets school record with 41 points while Goodrick adds 30, 13 rebounds and nine assists

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's basketball team toppled No. 12 and Sunshine State Conference-leading Barry on Saturday, behind a school-record 41 points by Chris Page and a fantastic all-around game from Harrison Goodrick, in a convincing 105-91 home win on Saturday evening.

The Sharks (10-13, 5-9 SSC) buried their first nine 3-pointers towards a new all-time program mark in long-range shooting (75 percent), while also tying the record for field goal percentage (66.7 percent, most recently in 2013). Page (Sr., Plainfield, Ind.) eclipsed the single-game scoring mark previously held by Sherard Hernandez (Jan. 9, 1999) and Kevin Chester (Feb. 20, 2008), while his outside/inside partner Goodrick (Jr., Sydney, Australia) put in a career-best 30 points, had 13 rebounds, and was just one shy of a triple-double with another new career standard of nine assists. The Aussie center was 9-of-11 from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

"It's not often you have the opportunity to beat a team of Barry's caliber, so we're going to savor this one for a day or two," said head coach Gary Tuell. "They're a wonderful team and for us to have a chance to pull off the upset we had to do a lot of things well. All the credit for this one goes to our guys. They followed the game plan to perfection. They executed, they played with great patience and shared the ball. When we had opportunities to attack we attacked and when we had to be patient and search for the shot we wanted, we were able to do that. Down the stretch we made our free throws (28-of-32 at the line), we took pretty good care of the ball and we got enough stops to keep them at bay.

"Obviously this was a wonderful team win for us. Everybody did his job and everybody stuck to the plan. And the bench support was special. I think we really came together today in a manner that we've been searching for all year. We talk about being 'All In' but today we finally were a team.

The Sharks dominated Barry (18-4, 10-3 SSC) in rebounding (39-24) and points in the paint (50-18), and had their second-highest free throw percentage of the season, putting in that 28-of-32 line on the night for 87.5 percent. They led wire-to-wire after scoring the first seven points of the game, going up as many as 20 midway through the second half, with the closest Barry getting it to being seven (85-78 with 4:13 remaining) before the Sharks doubled that for the final margin.

"The individual performances by Harrison Goodrick and Chris Page were special," said Tuell. "I've said often that Harrison has been the best center in the league since Christmas. He finished this one with 30 points (on only 11 shots), 13 rebounds and nine assists … just one assist shy of a triple double. He was just dominant for us. He made several drive and dunks that electrified the crowd and juiced up our players. He's just a special player and a special young man who is now beginning to blossom into the kind of player we always felt he could be. He's only going to get better.

"Chris had 41 points and ran the team beautifully. He was our head out there, making decisions and moving the ball to the right people, keeping us balanced and getting us into our offense. He's such a tough guy to guard because he can get to the rim or make the three. He has been playing great for us the last two or three weeks. Chris is finally running our team and helping to lead. He's sharing the ball, getting other guys involved. We can win with that. We can win with the way Harrison and Chris are leading us right now."

In addition to that combo, Dwayne Gibson (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.) scored 12, making 4-of-5 shots and 2-of-3 3-pointers, along with five rebounds; Mike Chalas (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit all three of his 3-point attempts in the first 7:48 for nine points; and Nick Pendergast (Sr., Bridgewater, Conn.) also had nine, along with six rebounds and two blocked shots.

"But there were so many other guys who played big roles in this," said Tuell. "Mike Chalas was terrific at both ends of the floor. Dwayne Gibson played with a spark and a swagger that he hasn't shown for the last couple of weeks. Nick Pendergast probably played his finest game for us … he rebounded, he defended and he made some big plays for us. BJ Edwards (So., Fort Myers, Fla.), Troy Spears (So., Martinsville, Ind.), Pat Huffine (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.), Austin Marciniak (Fr., Uniontown, Ohio), Nikita Orap (Fr., Moscow, Russia) … the guys were focused and determined."

Yunio Barrueta was Barry's leading scorer with 24. While the Bucs did make 17 3-pointers, 10 in the second half, they were held beneath their per-game scoring average and totaled their least amount of points since Jan. 20. It snapped a six-game Barry win streak, and five straight victories for the Bucs in the series.

"I think it's interesting that we've now played four halves with Barry this season and we've managed to outscore them in three of the four halves," said Tuell. "We shot 67.9 and 65.2 percent in the two halves tonight. In our first meeting we shot 48.3 percent in the first half and then shot 76.9 percent in the second half. So we've been about as efficient as a team can be when we've played Barry. You have to give our players a heck of a lot of credit for the way they've executed and done what we've asked of them. I'm just so proud of our guys. We've had a rough few days and our guys have circled the wagons and come together in a way that makes all of us proud. This keeps us in the hunt for a tournament berth so hopefully we can find a way to win another one or two before the regular season is over."

The Sharks will next make the long trip north on Wednesday to take on SSC provisional member Embry-Riddle. The game will begin at 7:30 in Daytona Beach. The team's biggest margin of victory came earlier this year against the Eagles, 87-64 on Jan. 2 in Fort Lauderdale.
