Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University softball dropped a close game to Ursuline College on Saturday as the Sharks lost 5-4 despite an earlier four-run comeback.
The entire game was played in the rain, but that did not stop the Sharks' bats as they outhit the Arrows 10 to seven. However, NSU (1-1) could not stage a seventh-inning rally to overtake Ursuline as sophomore Gina Rosshirt notched the win (1-0) and freshman Sadie Jones got her first career save.
The Arrows (2-1) took an early lead, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first off of an
Erica Winter (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) wild pitch. That was Winter's (0-1) one stumble as she went on to pitch five more innings earning three strikeouts in her 2016 debut. Ursuline would go on to score another run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Sharks would stage a comeback in the top of the fifth inning starting with a walk for
Ashley Roe (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas). Team veterans
Dakota Villella (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) and
Jessie Brown (So., Hollywood, Fla.) got back-to-back singles to load the bases. Freshman
Megan Granitto (Wellington, Fla.) saw her first RBI of the season off a single to left field to score Roe and put NSU on the board. After going 4-for-4 in the previous game against Colorado Christian,
Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) showed what she could do again with a double to right center to score Villella and Brown. The final Sharks' run of the inning, and the game, came off of a
Rachel Minier (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) single.
Ursuline would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth and take the lead in the bottom of the sixth from a RBI flyout. Brown, who went 2-for-4 on the day, would single to third base to start the top of the seventh but remain stranded to give the Arrows the win.
The second game slated for Saturday, Feb. 6 against Eckerd College was canceled due to inclement weather. The Sharks will resume play on Sunday, Feb. 7 when they take on conference opponents Tampa at 9 a.m. and Lynn at 11:30 a.m. in Clearwater, Florida.
