Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (9-22, 1-12 SSC) fell 6-0 to Sunshine State Conference (SSC) opponent Eckerd (18-11-1, 5-4 SSC) on Sunday in the continuation of Saturday's rainout.
The Tritons started off strong with a single from Kaleigh Floyd followed by a Shark error and two-run home run by Carrie Shere to go up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. They tacked on two more runs before getting out of the inning despite a pitching change from
Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) to
Megan Granitto (Fr., Wellington, Fla.).
Jones singled to left to start off the second but was left on base. The game would go two more innings before another score was registered, which came from a two-out solo home run by Kaycie Duncan to move the Tritons to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Sharks got two runners on in the top of the fifth with two outs as
Dakota Villella (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) walked and Granitto reached on an error but both were left on base.
Haley Gonzales (So., Boca Raton) picked up a single in the fifth as did
Erica Winter (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) in the seventh to try to get the Sharks going but the game concluded with Eckerd earning the 6-0 victory.
Jones (3-9) picked up the loss despite only pitching a third of an inning but giving up four hits and five runs. Granitto pitched the remaining five and two thirds innings only relinquishing three hits, one run and picking up a strikeout. Grace Willeck (1-0) got her first win for Eckerd with four hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
NSU will be back home to host Albany State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 22 beginning at 5 p.m. followed by SSC opponent Florida Tech in a three-game series beginning on Thursday, March 24 at 6 p.m. More details are available at nsusharks.com.
