FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University softball (11-31, 1-17 SSC) will have their Shark Night on Friday, April 15 to open a three-game series against Sunshine State Conference (SSC) opponent Florida Southern (11-25-1, 3-11-1 SSC).
The Shark Night will feature a tailgate event that begins at 5 p.m. on Friday night at the A.D. Griffin Sports Complex with the game following at 6 p.m. There will be a cornhole tournament where prizes will be awarded to the top finishers, free food will be offered and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC0 will also be accepting donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Those who make a donation of at least $5 will receive a NSU seat cushion and a raffle ticket for the chance-drawing being put on by NSU SAAC. Those who enter will have the opportunity to win numerous prizes including a flat screen TV and gift cards for local restaurants with the drawing to be held on Friday, April 22.
Last weekend, the Sharks lost three games to provisional SSC member Palm Beach Atlantic.
Megan Granitto (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) picked up two losses and is now 5-11 on the season. Granitto allowed 11 hits, five walks and picked up a strikeout in the first game and only gave up two earned runs in the third contest.
Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) moved to 4-11 after relinquishing 11 earned runs, two walks and striking out one in the second game.
Sophia Devesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Dakota Villella (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) and
Katey Blummer (Jr., Naples, Fla.) led the way at the plate last weekend. Devesa went 2-for-3 in the first matchup on Friday night while Villella saw a hit in all three games. Blummer also singled in all three contests and went 2-for-3 in the final game of the weekend to become the team's second leading hitter with a batting average of .297. Jones still holds the top spot batting .358 with 23 RBI. The team is hitting a combined .251 while opponents are averaging .308 in the batter's box.
Florida Southern is coming off of three losses at Florida Tech. The Mocs are 2-9-1 on the road this season. Pitching duties have been split among four this year with Brandi Jones (5-12) seeing the most action in the circle. Jones has the team-low earned run average of 2.37. The Mocs put up a combined 2.92 average against opponents while competitors are throwing 1.62 against them.
Junior Erica Morrissey, who is tied for second in the conference in doubles with 13, is leading the team offensively batting .315 with 15 RBI. She had two multi-hit games last weekend going 2-for-5 and 2-for-3 with one run scored against Florida Tech. As a team, the Mocs are batting .232 while opponents average .268.
