Baseball Completes Its Fourth Conference Sweep In A Row

Sharks put up 10 runs in each game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (28-12, 14-4 SSC) continues to stay #RedHot, completing the sweep of the Rollins College Tars (21-19, 6-12 SSC) with 10-5 and 10-3 wins on Saturday afternoon. The sweep marks the fourth Sunshine State Conference sweep in a row for the Sharks, tying the program record for most conference sweeps in a season.

Game One – NSU 10, Rollins 5

The Sharks jumped out to a 2-1 lead early, thanks to clutch hitting from Michael Hernandez and Kavan Thompson. Hernandez laced a double down the left field line, scoring Andres Visbal, while Thompson grounded out to the Rollins shortstop, driving in Kevin Suarez.

Suarez stepped to the plate in the third inning with the bases loaded and proceeded to double down the right field line, driving in Brandon Gomez and Daniel Zardon. Michael Hernandez then squared up the first pitch he saw to centerfield, allowing Suarez and Visbal scored.

Starter Matt Hardy allowed a two-run home run to Rollins in the fifth, bringing the score to 6-3. The Sharks bounced right back, scoring three in the fifth, as Visbal scored on a throwing error by the Rollins catcher and Jancarlos Cintron singled with the bases loaded, driving in two runs.

Rollins would bring the score to 9-5 in the sixth, scoring two on a two-run double to left centerfield. The Tars' offensive production wasn't nearly enough, as the Sharks added one more run on a Zardon RBI-double in the eighth. NSU would go on to win the ballgame 10-5 behind a stellar pitching performance from Alex Kline out of the bullpen, tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

Game Two – NSU 10, Rollins 3

The series finale was all NSU, as the Sharks received a career pitching performance from Julian Loret de Mola. The senior right hander tossed seven straight scoreless innings before surrendering a run. Rollins managed to score two in the eighth but that was all, as Loret de Mola earned his fourth win.

While Loret de Mola was dealing on the mound, the offense came alive in the fifth inning when Cintron gave the Sharks a lead, driving in Thompson for the first run of the ballgame. NSU broke the game open in the sixth inning, as six players crossed the plate to give the Sharks a 7-0 lead. Brandon Gomez launched a two-run home run, Thompson had an RBI-single, Cintron had a sacrifice fly, and Diaz singled to drive in Woods and Thompson.

The Sharks capped their 10-run offensive showcase with a three-run home run off of the bat of Kevin Suarez. Suarez finished the weekend 7-for-12.

Joe DiBenedetto tossed the ninth inning for the Sharks, shutting the door on the series and completing the sweep of the Tars.

NSU will be back in action on Tuesday night against Palm Beach Atlantic at the NSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
