No. 17 Sharks Baseball Defeats Rollins On Friday Night

Sharks tie their program conference wins in a row record with their 8th straight.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (26-12, 12-4 SSC) collected 19 hits en route to its 26th win on Friday night, defeating the Rollins College Tars (21-17, 6-10 SSC) by a score of 11-7. The win extends NSU's conference win streak to eight games, tying the program record.

The Sharks jumped out to a 7-0 lead, highlighted by a grand slam off of the bat of Brandon Gomez and a two-run home run from Dylan Woods. Starter Alex Mateo was cruising through an inning and a third, striking out two batters along the way before Mother Nature forced play to be delayed for two and a half hours due to an impressive lightning storm.

When play resumed around 9:05 p.m., Cameron Churchill took the mound for the Sharks and finished the top of the second inning for the Sharks with a strikeout and a popup. Andres Visbal extended the score to 8-0 in the bottom half of the second, launching a solo home run over the right field wall.

Down 8-0, the Tars began to crawl back into the game, scoring two runs in the third inning and four in the fifth to make the score 8-6. After 2.2 innings of work, Cameron Churchill handed the ball over the Devin Pellien who tossed four innings against a solid offensive Rollins team. Pellien and Churchill each allowed three earned runs, with Pellien earning the win.

The Sharks extended the score to 11-6 in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with a Sebastian Diaz double, scoring Woods and Jancarlos Cintron. Brandon Gomez would later single, driving in Diaz.

Rollins scored one run for the rest of the game, allowing the Sharks to take the Friday night tilt by a score of 11-7. Devin Raftery pitched the ninth inning, closing the door on the Tars and extending his scoreless streak to 10.2 innings across eight appearances.

NSU will be back in action on Saturday afternoon against Rollins College at the NSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
