CARY, N.C. – The No. 5 Nova Southeastern University baseball team (41-16, 18-6 SSC) dominated the No. 4 Lander University Bearcats (43-15, 22-8 PBC) on Tuesday night, winning by a score of 12-1. The Sharks collected 15 hits, including six extra base hits, highlighted by a Danny Zardon two-run home run. Alexander Kline earned the win, moving his record to 4-1 on the year. The highlight of the game came when Kavan Thompson robbed a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the wind right out Lander's sail.
After allowing a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, Kline settled in to throw five scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Steven Fleming and Joe DiBenedetto who sealed the deal for the Sharks. Kline received all the run support he needed, as the Sharks put up four, two and six runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
In the fourth inning, Thompson singled to right field with the bases loaded, scoring Andres Visbal and Brandon Gomez. Zardon then scored on a throwing error by the Lander third baseman who attempted to get Zardon at the plate on Diaz groundball. Dylan Woods capped the fourth inning with a single to right field, driving in Thompson.
In the fifth inning, it looked like the Sharks were going to go scoreless before Zardon smashed a 1-2 fastball over the left field wall, giving the Sharks a 6-1 lead. NSU continued to pour it on in the sixth inning, as Woods, Visbal, Gomez and Zardon drove in runs to give the Sharks a 12-1 lead.
Gomez finished the game going 4-for-5, while Thompson finished 3-for-5. Visbal and Woods each collected two hits in the game and Kevin Suarez extended his on-base streak to 42 games with a single in the sixth inning.
NSU will play Caly Poly Pomona on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
