ST. LEO, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern University women's tennis team saw their season come to a close on Monday afternoon, falling in the NCAA South Region opening round to No. 8 West Florida, 5-3.
The Sharks (15-5) fell behind early, as the Argos (23-5) won two of the three doubles points. The only Shark tally came in the No. 2 draw, courtesy of
Klaudia Boczova (Jr., Bratislava, Slovakia) and
Nastassia Rubel (Jr., Minsk, Belarus), 8-5 over Kat Dikosavljevic and Dianna Vlad.
The Argos went up 4-1 with wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles draws, but the Sharks clawed back with Boczova nearly flawless at No. 1 (6-0, 6-1) and
Petra Jurova (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) taking No. 2 (6-2, 6-2). The No. 5 slot was headed NSU's way as well, as Rubel won the first set 6-2 and was leading in the second, but before that could wrap up, UWF took the clinching point in the No. 6 draw.
For the Sharks and their six seniors – in addition to Jurova, also
Irina Constantinide (Galati, Romania),
Sabrina Kierberg (Munich, Germany),
Linda Kornienko (Fort Myers, Fla.),
Carlee Rizzolo (Livingston, N.J.) and
Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) – it marks the end of a sterling two-year run with back-to-back NCAA postseason appearances.
