HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET 1 | The two teams exchanged the first 14 points of the match, neither side taking more than one in a row. The back-and-forth nature continued, as they were also tied at nine, 10 and 11 points apiece, before the Tars took the first three-point lead by either team, at 16-13. The Sharks remained undeterred, however, and quickly went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead and force a Rollins timeout. They didn't let the Sharks get too far ahead, once again tying the match at 20. The Sharks took three of the next four, and force Rollins to regroup during their final timeout. The Tars came out of the break on a 3-0 run of their own to force set point, but a service error brought the set to its 14
th tie at 24-24, before additional even scores of 25 and 26-all. The Sharks finally pulled through, as a block assist by
Samantha Blasko and Jane Early and a Rollins attack error gave them the 28-26 first set win.
SET 2 | The second set started very similarly to the first, until four straight points for the Tars gave them an early 8-5 lead. The Sharks played catch-up for a while until a 5-1 run of their own put them in front by multiple points for the first time in the set, at 14-12. This time it was the Tars refused to relent and the teams were tied four more times, lastly at 17-17. The Sharks took control, though, and won the final six points of the set, four of them on kills by
Kim Blasko and three times assisted by her sister,
Samantha Blasko, as the team took the set 25-19 and went up 2-0 in the match.
SET 3 | Looking for a break, the Tars started set three in quite a different way, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. But like every other deficit the Sharks faced in the match, they shrugged it off, keeping the margin more manageable before tying the set for the first time at 10. They remained tied at 14-all, but the Sharks then reeled four of the next five points and never looked back, coasting to a 25-20 victory to clinch the sweep.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Sharks tallied seven service aces, including a team-high four by Kaelyn Brock. The Tars, meanwhile, were unable to achieve even one service ace.
- The Sharks also won the service error battle, as they committed just eight to Rollins' 12.
- Denvyr Tyler-Palmer had a game-high 16 kills, while Kim Blasko added 10 of her own. Megan Burns also led all players with 20 digs with Brock right behind at 17.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This was the Sharks' first road sweep since Nov. 7, 2015, which was also over Rollins, and just their third since the start of the 2010 season.
- Tyler-Palmer's 16 kills give her a total of 433 this season, already surpassing her total from last season of 427. She has exceeded Dana Holger's 430 in 2015 for the sixth-most in program history and is only five away from breaking Melinda Gorman's NCAA-era single-season record of 437. Tyler-Palmer's per-set average of 4.92, meanwhile, is poised to leave Michelle Mertens' all-time record of 4.30 from 1997 in the dust, the only previous time an NSU volleyball averaged four or more kills per set over the course of a full season.
