HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET 1 | The Sharks kept it close early, but the Sailfish quickly jumped out to a 13-5 lead, with a 10-2 run doing the heavy lifting. The Sharks got four back to cut the margin in half, but PBA did same immediately thereafter to push it back up to eight. Trailing 21-12, the Sharks found some resiliency, reeling off seven straight points with three kills by
Denvyr Tyler-Palmer and eventually getting to within one point, at 22-21. That was as close as they would come, however, as the Sailfish managed to fend off the late rally and take the opener, 25-22.
SET 2 | In the second set, the Sharks had the early lead, at 3-1 after a service ace from Jane Early and 4-2 because of a PBA service error. The Sailfish then scored five of the next six, though the Sharks remained within striking distance to regain the lead with an 8-3 rally of their own, putting them ahead 14-11. This time, PBA fought back and reeled off seven points in a row and did not allow the Sharks to get closer than three behind, en route to their 25-18 set victory.
SET 3 | Though it ended up being the final set of the match, set three began as a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams tied at 6-all before four consecutive for the Sailfish put them ahead. The Sharks would get back within one a couple of times, but were unable to get over the hump, and PBA secured the sweep by ending the match on a 10-3 run.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Sailfish had ten more kills than the Sharks, 39-29, and also committed ten fewer errors, 14 compared to 24.
- Tyler-Palmer led all players with 13 kills.
- Kaelyn Brock tallied a team-high 11 digs as the only Shark in double digits. The Sailfish, meanwhile, had three players with 10 or more but only outpaced the Sharks as a team 50-45.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Tyler-Palmer is now up to 446 kills this season, breaking Melinda Gorman's NCAA-era single-season record of 437 set in 2007. Coming into the match sixth all-time at 433, she has also surpassed Michelle Mertens (437 in 1996) and Rosalyn Lahara (445 in 1999) for the third-highest kill total in program history. Next up is Mertens' 1997 mark of 473, just 27 ahead of her.
- Tyler-Palmer also had 1,197 kills in her Sharks career prior to the match, now sitting at 1,210 and in fourth place all-time. She is nine away from matching the total of 1,219 by Class of 2015 alum and former teammate Dana Holger.
