VALDOSTA, Ga. – First-year head coach
Doug Neagle recorded his first shutout as a Shark as the No. 15 women's tennis team (2-2) bounced back with a 5-0 win over College of Coastal Georgia (0-2) at the Valdosta State Tennis Courts.
The Sharks swept the doubles matches for the first time this season and took a 3-0 lead into the singles flights. For the third straight match,
Nastassia Rubel and
Simone Pratt gave the Sharks the early lead at No. 2 doubles with a dominant 8-0 win over Madeline Garner and Lindsey Lawing. The win gives the them a 4-0 record in doubles this season. In the top flight,
Luicelena Perez and
Isabella Lowrey earned their third-consecutive victory with an 8-2 win over Daniella Caruso and Samantha Sepe.
Eva Agasse and
Alex Kaeser picked up their first win at No. 3 doubles defeating Samantha Lasslett and Paige DeLaPerriere, 8-3.
Perez and Rubel continued their dominance in singles as both players picked up victories to seal the win for the Sharks. Perez improved to 4-0 in No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Caruso. Rubel followed shortly after, finishing with an undefeated weekend after defeating DeLaPerriere in the No. 3 singles flight, 6-0, 6-1.
"The girls played hard today," Neagle said "They had a chip on their shoulder after dropping last night's match and wanted to split this weekend to build momentum for next week. LP (Perez) continues to step up for us in No. 1 singles and doubles. Nastassia and Simone have played well in doubles together. Next week will be a challenge for us starting our Sunshine State Conference play against Saint Leo."
Next Saturday will be a test for the Sharks as they start SSC play against the defending south regional champions and national semi-finalists Saint Leo at 10:00 a.m in Saint Leo, Fla.
