MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (0-5) dropped its last two games of the First Pitch Classic hosted by Florida Tech on Sunday morning. In the first game, the Sharks fell to PBA, 6-2, before turning around and falling to No. 3 Armstrong State, 10-3, in the finale.
GAME ONE
Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Sharks rallied to take the lead, 2-1.
Lexie Storrer drew a leadoff walk and was pushed to third on a double by
Dominique Sprengers, only to score by the next batter,
Megan Granitto, who hit a single to shortstop. With Sprengers on third, Granitto stole second to put both runners in scoring position, setting up
Ashley Roe to bring Sprengers home with an RBI-single up the middle. The Sailfish (1-3) defense stopped the scoring there with back-to-back outs to end the inning.
PBA knotted the score in their half of the fifth inning with an RBI-single by pinch hitter Alexis Brown, before taking off in the bottom of the sixth, recording four runs on five hits to bring their advantage to 6-2, which the Sharks couldn't recover from.
Roe finished 2-for-3 for the Sharks with an RBI while Storrer and Sprengers were 1-for-2 and 1-for-3, respectively, each scoring once.
Storrer (0-2) went the distance for NSU, allowing six runs (5 ER) on 10 hits with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
For the second time this weekend, the Sharks took on the No. 3 Armstrong State Pirates. On Friday, the two teams faced off and ASU emerged with a 6-3 victory.
The Pirates grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first, and the Sharks cut the deficit to one in the next half frame.
Dakota Villella led the inning off with an infield single, advancing to second by a bunt-single by
Sydney Lageyre. After a failed picked off attempt, both runner advanced, and on the net play, the Pirates successfully ran the double-play to get
Dana Edmundson with a ground out and tag Villella out at third, halting the Sharks from scoring. After a walk drawn by Storrer, Granitto singled to left center, scoring Lageyre to bring the score to 2-1.
The next inning saw Nova Southeastern knot up the game 2-2 with an RBI-double by
Alex Suzuki, scoring Roe, who reached on a leadoff draw.
Armstrong came back, however, tallying four runs over the next two innings and keeping the Sharks at bay, not allowing any hits until the final frame.
ASU exploded for four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh, taking a commanding 10-2 lead. NSU attempted to rally, but fell short, tallying just one run on a sacrifice hit by Edmundson which plated
Mary Acosta.
Villella had a strong performance, going 2-for-4, while Granitto and Suzuki were 1-for-3 and had an RBI apiece.
Sprengers (0-2) was saddled with the loss after spending 4.0 innings in the circle for NSU, allowing six runs (5 ER) on nine hits.
Erica Winter came in for the final 3.0 innings and gave up four runs (3 ER) on four hits with a strikeout.
The Sharks will have their first home doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 9, evening as they host Alabama Huntsville. The first game is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. For live coverage, head to the softball schedule page at NSUSharks.com.
