FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The NSU softball team earned its first win of the season on Thursday evening in the first part of a doubleheader with No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville as
Lexie Storrer served a no-hitter for a 2-0 Sharks (1-6) victory. The Chargers (6-2) didn't back down, however, and came back to dominate NSU in a 12-0 five-inning win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
After three quick outs in the top of the first, the Sharks went on to score one of their two runs in the home-half of the inning. With one out,
Sydney Lageyre was hit by a pitch and
Dana Edmundson drew a walk to put runners in scoring position, before a fielder's choice by Storrer loaded the bases. After UAH's starting pitcher, Emily Glover, caught
Megan Granitto swinging, a wild pitch during
Dominique Sprengers' at bat scored Lageyre for NSU's first run of the game.
After a scoreless frame, the Sharks tacked on their last run of the game in the bottom of the third. Storrer drew a lead-off single to right and after
Megan Maloney was hit by a pitch, another wild pitch put the runners at second and third. Sprengers, the next batter, brought Storrer home with a sacrifice fly to center field to give Nova Southeastern a 2-0 advantage and the eventual win.
Storrer was 1-for-3 with a run scored and
Dominique Sprengers tallied the lone RBI for the Sharks.
Dakota Villella and
Mary Acosta were both 1-for-2 while Villella drew one walk.
Dana Edmundson drew two walks.
In her 7.0 innings in the circle, Storrer struck out four while walking two in addition to her no-hitter. The last time a "no-no" was recorded for the Sharks was by Sara DeMuth back in March 2012 against Eckerd. With the win, her record improves to 1-2.
Glover was handed the loss for the Chargers, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits, striking out seven with five walks.
GAME TWO
The Chargers struck early and hard in the first inning, utilizing NSU errors to tally seven of their 12 total runs of the game.
In the top of the second,
Dana Edmundson recorded the lone hit of the game for Nova Southeastern with a double to left field. This would serve as the only time the Sharks would get into scoring position throughout the rest of the game.
Alabama-Huntsville scored four more runs on five hits in the top of the third before tacking on another insurance run in the fifth, sealing the 12-0 victory.
Tyler Harrison was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Chargers while Taylor Wascavage also went 2-for-3 and tallied two RBI and scored twice. The designated player, Lexi Beach, was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Harrison earned the win for UAH allowing one hit in 5.0 innings with a whopping 10 strikeouts.
Erica Winter was saddled with the loss for NSU, tossing the first 0.1 innings and allowing four runs (0 ER) on no hits with a walk. Sprengers finished out the final 4.2 innings in the circle and gave up eight runs (5 ER) on 10 hits.
After a weekend break, the Sharks will be back in action at home, hosting their first three-game series against SSC provisional member Embry-Riddle. The first game of the series is scheduled to start on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6:00 p.m.
