Sharks Drop Saturday Twinbill to Tampa

With the wins, the Spartans clinch the overall series, 2-1.

TAMPA, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team dropped both parts of a doubleheader against fellow Sunshine State Conference member Tampa on Saturday afternoon, 4-3 and 6-0. The two losses bring NSU to 11-14 overall and 4-5 against SSC members while Tampa improved to 19-4 on the season and 9-3 in the conference.

GAME ONE

Down 4-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Sharks managed to cut the deficit to just one run, 4-3. With two outs on the board and Mary Acosta and Dakota Villella at first and second, Megan Granitto sent a base-clearing triple to center to score the base runners. The next batter, Ashley Roe, helped tally NSU's final score of the game with an RBI-single to left field, plating Granitto.

The Sharks were led in game one by Villella, who was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored once. Granitto finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Roe, Acosta and Megan Maloney all were 1-for-3.

Erica Winter (4-3) was handed the loss, tossing all 6.0 innings and giving up four runs (2 ER) on seven hits.

GAME TWO

Tampa's starting pitcher, Corynn Miner (7-3), seemed to be too much to handle for the Sharks as the right-hander held the Sharks to just three hits and scoreless in game two.

NSU's closest chance to scoring came in the third inning as back-to-back singles by Dana Edmundson and Villella put the Sharks in scoring position. That would be the only time of the game NSU was able to advance past first base.

Villella put up another solid performance at the plate in game two, tallying two of the Sharks' three hits in her three at bats.

Storrer moved to an even 7-7 on the season with the loss, seeing all 6.0 innings in the circle and allowing six runs (4 ER) on 11 hits.

After more than a week away from home, the Sharks will return to the AD Griffin Sports Complex to host a non-conference doubleheader against Maryville on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m. For live coverage, head to NSUSharks.com, or follow @NSU_Softball on Twitter.
