NSU Women’s Golf Wins Lady Panther Invitational

Sharks pick up second tournament win this season.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's golf team ended their regular season in style by picking up their second tournament win of the season, this time at the Lady Panther Invitational. The Sharks carded a three-round 887 (+23) on 6,059-yard, par-72 Duran Golf Club course on Tuesday afternoon.

The Sharks are peaking at just the right time, with their second win in their last three outings, as the team prepares for the Sunshine State Conference Championships and NCAA postseason. With a 301 and a firm third-place after the opening round, consistent rounds of 294 and 292 respectively through the final 36 holes gave the lift NSU needed to grab the tournament win. The Sharks finished three strokes ahead of the nine-team field.

"It was a great win for us and I am very pleased," head coach Heather Wall said. "We will continue working like we have been and take this momentum into the postseason. The team is coming together very nicely and I like what I'm seeing out on the course."

Junior Jamie Freedman added, "I'm really proud that we got a win in our last tournament of the regular season, especially heading into postseason. With conference coming up, I think everyone stuck strong and put some strong rounds together today."

Despite a final round surge by Saint Leo (+26) and tournament low 284 on the final 18 holes, the Lions finished three strokes behind NSU for second place. Seminole State (+37) held onto second place after the first two rounds, but fell back to third in the final team standings. Host Florida Tech (+44) finished fourth and Converse (+104) rounded out the top-five.

NSU's Jamie Freedman led the Sharks the entire tournament and after a final round of 71 (-2), she finished tied for second in the individual standings at even par 216. Janelle Johnson (+7) grabbed sixth place in the individual standings, while Sophie Madden (+11) and Aldana Foigel (+11) both finished tied for 10th. Michelle Ruiz (+14) fired a final round of even par golf to climb eight spots and finished tied for 14th overall.

Individual medalist honors went to Saint Leo's Marie Coors. With a tournament low of 66 in the final round, Coors finished at seven under 209 beating the field by seven strokes.

The Sharks will now turn their sites to the Sunshine State Conference Championships, April 23-25 hosted at the Country Club of Winter Haven in Winter Haven, Fla.
