HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET 1 | Trailing 4-2, the Sharks used a 6-1 run capped with a kill by
Emily Sippel to take the lead, 8-5. NSU continued to pressure the Tritons, grabbing a six-point lead (14-8) before Eckerd was forced to use their first timeout. The Sharks continued to build on their lead, going up by as many as eight points multiple times including at 24-16. After a pair of Triton points, a kill by
Brittany Landrum pushed the Sharks to victory, 25-18.
SET 2 | Similar to the first set, the Sharks had to chip away at an early Eckerd lead, using back-to-back aces by
Aleyna Kennel to steal the lead at 16-14. The Tritons were able to get the advantage back on their side, 20-19, and even led at 22-21, but a 4-1 run by NSU including two kills by
Alex Boone pushed NSU to a 25-23 win and overall 2-0 lead.
SET 3 | The Tritons got ahead early with another big lead, jumping out 8-2. The Sharks got as close as four points multiple times, but Eckerd was able to keep the Sharks at bay, leading by as many nine points, at 20-11, before picking up their first set victory of the match by a 25-17 score.
SET 4 | The fourth set was a polar opposite of the first three, with both teams trading points early on and neither side leading by more than one until a service ace put Eckerd ahead 9-7. They then continued to go back and forth, when the Sharks scored three in a row to finally tie the set again at 16-apiece, but the Tritons responded with a 3-0 run of their own. The Sharks got back within one point at 22-21, and then again at 23-22 and 24-23, but the Tritons followed with a point each time, refusing to allow the Sharks to get even again, taking the set 25-23.
SET 5 | The Sharks finally got their first early advantage to start the decisive, final set, as a service ace by
Ally Ford forcing a Tritons timeout with the home squad in front, 7-3, before an attack error gave the Sharks another point to take with them to the other side of the court. Eckerd cut the margin down to just two, at 10-8, but in a reverse of the previous set, the Sharks were able to keep their opponent away for the most part. A brief scare followed a Tritons kill and block, which brought the lead down to just one (13-12), but the Sharks responded with a kill (by Ford) and a block (by Landrum and Tucek) to secure the clutch, five-set victory.
