HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sharks' offense wasted no time setting the tone, as the first five batters all reached base safely against American International starter Angel Mendez. After a pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases,
Ian Acevedo found a hole through the left side of the infield to give Nova Southeastern the quick 2-0 edge. Just three batters later, the lead soon grew to 3-0 thanks to a
Nathan Chevalier sac fly lifted to center that plated
Garrett Wolforth easily from third.
A walk once again sparked the Nova Southeastern offense in the home half of the second, with
Jeffrey Cyr reaching on just four pitches. The sophomore would soon advance to third following a stolen base and a wild pitch before being driven in on a single into right by
Daniel Irisarri. Already up 4-0,
Samuel Duran kept the offense moving with an RBI-single into right in the ensuing at-bat. As if the Sharks needed anymore help, the Yellow Jackets then committed consecutive errors, allowing Acevedo to score after being put aboard via a four-pitch walk of his own.
American International put two away with nobody on base in the home of the third, yet a Duran single into center prolonged the inning for Wolforth, who sent the first pitch of the at-bat over the wall in left center for his fifth homer of the season.
With a comfortable eight-run cushion, Pastore brushed off two singles in the fourth by striking out the final two batters of the inning. Feeding off the momentum, the freshman followed with a perfect fifth to put himself in line for his first career win.
Pastore's night was done after five, but the zeros continued to line the scoreboard after the ball was handed to
Jarret Krzyzanowski to start the sixth. Both Krzyzanowski and
Cameron Schmidt combined to work four innings out of the bullpen, surrendering just three hits, to secure the Sharks' second shutout of the year.
