HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second baseman
Duncan Pastore put the Sharks on the right track, earning a four-pitch, first-inning leadoff walk to give NSU a runner in the first of six innings with a man aboard. After stealing second and advancing on a sailed throw, Pastore scored as catcher Jared Herron's throw hit
Garrett Wolforth on his way to first. After also stealing second and advancing to third, Wolforth crossed the plate on a
Christian Demby sacrifice fly to push NSU ahead 2-0 on the first lead of the series.
Making his first start at first base,
Christian Kuzemka cemented the Sharks' approach in the top of the second, leading off with a first-pitch home run skied to left field for a 3-1 advantage over the Tars. Kuzemka followed with an RBI in the third, sending
Ian Acevedo home on a failed Tars' double play errant throw, granting NSU a three-run lead.
In the meantime, NSU starter
Matt Ornelas kept the Tars largely checked through his 5.0-inning appearance, allowing just four hits, which included a solo Jack Gonzalez home run.
Rollins starter Garrett Leonard finally settled in and got the Sharks reined in, but NSU went right back to work against Ross Korosec at the first trip to the bullpen. Leading off the seventh,
Andrew Labosky earned a five-pitch walk and crossed the dish on a Demby RBI single into left field. Coming back around in the eighth, Labosky again spearheaded an NSU score, smacking a two-run gap double into right center.
Garrett Wolforth belted the next pitch into right field to score Labosky on an RBI single and cap NSU's scoring.
Stalwart defensive play got NSU starters and relievers out of jams time and time again – including a pair of bases loaded situations that saw the Tars come up empty late in the game.
Brock Minich and
Gil Torres handled the Tars for 3.2 of the final innings, allowing just one run and one hit down the stretch, but
JP Williams came in to secure the final out and the win for Ornelas (1-1), 8-2.
