Sharks Women Third, Men Fourth as Cross Country Opens 2019 at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's and women's cross country teams squeezed in one season-opening competition before athletic operations were suspended for incoming Hurricane Dorian, with the Sharks taking to the course at the FAU Cross country Invitational on Friday at the South County Regional Park. The Sharks were led by junior Michelle Bauer and freshman Trey May, respectively.

WOMEN'S RESULTS: 
Bauer stepped into the leadership spot for the women's in the opening 5k, finishing ninth overall in a time of 19:33.05. Freshman Sophia Leto rose into second among the Sharks scorers for her debut collegiate race, coming in 19th in 20:00.94, edging out sophomore Carli Etrick at 20:11.48 in 25th place. Rounding out the scoring group, freshman Lauren Breski was 34th in 21:15.42 and classmate Leah Marville was 36th at 21:20.76.
 
Overall, with 110 points the Sharks women finished third out of eight teams – six DI programs – NSU falling behind only Florida Atlantic (32) and UCF (76).

MEN'S RESULTS:  
For the men, May delivered a strong move in his debut collegiate race, producing a career-best 5k time of 16:06.13 to finish 10th overall and lead the Sharks. After sitting out last year, Inigo Cillero ran a 16:56.77 for 23rd place in his first NSU race, while freshman Jack Hayes came in 29th at 17:25.67 in his debut. Rounding out the scorers, sophomores Quynlan Duffy (18:01.71) and Andrew Swanson (18:50.36) came in at 40th and 48th, respectively.
 
The Sharks men were fourth among six teams in the 5k with 119 points. Stetson topped the men's field with a score of just 20.

Depending on any adjustments for campus closures surrounding Hurricane Dorian, the Sharks are scheduled to race next on Sept. 7 at the Florida Tech Invitational in Melbourne, Fla.
