HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither side started out particularly aggressive. In fact, the first shot wasn't registered until the 14th minute by Florida Southern's Courtney Chomko, a freshman who was facing off against her sister, Sharks junior Kaitlyn Chomko.
  • The Moccasins had the first three shots of the match, all of which were saved by goalkeeper Shannon Hearty. The Sharks, meanwhile, waited until the 25th minute for their first attempt, off the foot of Brianna Paige, and added five more before the half was over. Only Hannah Christophe's, 34 seconds after Paige's, required Mocs keeper Jenny Staten to make a save, however.
  • The second half was even quieter than the first in terms of scoring attempts, with five combined shots, compared to nine before the break. The Sharks had four tries intermittently throughout the period, but all four were off target.
  • With 44 seconds remaining in regulation, the Mocs took their first since the 21st minute, which was stopped by keeper Natalie Robayna.
  • Playing into overtime for the first time this season, the Sharks turned up their aggressiveness and accounted for each of the three shots recorded in overtime. Emma Heikkila had an attempt stopped in the 95th minute, but less than two and a half minutes later, off a corner kick from Chama Silva, tried again and was successful for the game-winner.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks have won each of their first seven games for the first time since 2006, when they ran their streak one game further, to eight, with a win over Barry, who the Sharks will be playing on Wednesday in an attempt to match that record for best start in program history. In 2006, they outscored their opponents 36-2 during their winning streak, while this season they already have a 39-1 edge.
  • Heikkila's goal was her fifth of the season, tying her with Dejah Holman for second on the team. It also gives her 25 career goals, making her just the sixth player in program history to reach that mark.
  • Heikkila now has two golden goals in her career with the Sharks, the first coming in another 1-0 victory on Sept. 19, 2018 over Embry-Riddle.
  • The Sharks already had the nation's seventh-best goals-against average coming into the match at 0.167, and further lowered that number to a measly 0.141 with just one goal allowed in 636:31.
  • Individually, Hearty, who has started all seven games, adds 45 minutes of scoreless play to her line, giving her a 0.29 goals-against average in 308:40. Robayna, who earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season, has now played 282:32 of flawless soccer to begin the season.
  • The Sharks defeated the Mocs on the road for the first time since Oct. 4, 2014, a 3-2 game that was also decided in overtime. In fact, this was the fourth match in a row in which the Sharks have played into overtime at Florida Southern, with a 3-2 loss in 2015 and a 2-2 tie in 2017 in between their two victories.
 STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Overall, the Sharks outshot their opponents 13-4, extending their margin to 214-32 on the season. Christophe and Heikkila led the way with three each, followed by Silva's two.
  • Splitting the time in net as they have all season, Hearty played the first half and recorded three saves, while Robayna added one more between the second half and overtime.
  • After starting the season with a scoreless streak of 360 minutes, the Sharks have strung together another one of over 275 minutes, earning their sixth shutout of the season.
  • For the Mocs, they have now been shutout in four consecutive matches, including three straight 1-0 losses in SSC play.
