HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first inning was an explosive one, with North Greenville sparking the bats on a two-out John Michael Faile home run out of left center. That shot ignited the Sharks, who opened with a leadoff
Daniel Irisarri walk, and quickly shifted the momentum. Two runners aboard for senior
Andrew Labosky amounted to a tied game, as the Sharks' third baseman found the hole in the defense with a bloop RBI double in shallow left field. Left fielder
Adan Fernandez tacked on a sacrifice fly, first baseman
Ray Sanchez debuted with an RBI double to the left field corner and shortstop
Brandon Chinea wrapped the frame with a hot shot RBI single over his counterpart to bring in Sanchez for the 4-1 lead.
However, the Crusaders did a solid job of hanging around and finished on scoring opportunities, sparking a rally in the third to even the score on a Douglas Angeli RBI triple and a second Faile home run – this time for a pair. NGU was again able to overtake the Sharks in the fourth courtesy of a two-run Gehrig Octavio RBI single.
Facing a 7-5 deficit, Chinea used a leadoff bunt single to fuel an NSU rally in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on NGU miscues to reach third, setting up a
Nathan Chevalier RBI groundout.
Sanchez added his second RBI double in the fifth and
Bryan Diaz scored from third on a Chinea sacrifice fly to knot the score at 7-all.
The tie wouldn't stand long, as the Crusaders responded with a five-run sixth inning that allowed the separation to maintain the lead for good.
Although Fernandez and freshman pinch hitter
Tyler Epstein tacked up RBI in the final three innings, the Sharks weren't able to overcome the deficit en route to the 15-9 final score in NGU's favor.
For the Crusaders, Lembcke (1-0) earned the win on 2.0 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. For the Sharks,
Jeremy Cook (0-1) took the loss, going 2.1 innings with six runs on five hits, striking out four.
