CLEARWATER, Fla. – The 2020 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships continued on Friday at the Long Center, as the Nova Southeastern men and women's swimming teams continued to produce top-tier finishes. The women's team extends its leadership position at 4489.5 points with a 93-point lead, while the men remain in second at 432 points just 49 points from first. On Friday, the Sharks added five more gold medals to bring the total to eight after two days, while setting two new SSC and SSC Championship Meet records in the women's 400 medley relay and women's 100 backstroke.

TOP PERFORMERS:
- The 200 freestyle relay involving Cassandra Wright, Hannah Trieschmann, Laurel Fink and Caily Friel earned the first gold of the night, recording a provisional time of 1:33.79.
- The men's 200 freestyle (Dawson, Averchenko, Martin Hemminghyth and Jonathan Yanello) took the silver with their provisional time of 1:20.00, just 0.12 seconds off Tampa's first-place time.
- The women's 400 medley relay team of Wright, Friel, Sasha Maslova and Jenna Johns set a new SSC and SSC Meet record with their winning time of 3:39.58. Leadoff backstroker, Wright, also set a new SSC and SSC Championship Meet record in the 100 backstroke with her time of 53.14. This is also an NCAA A-Qualifier.
- The men's 400 medley relay team of Aleksei Averchenko, Samuel Brettmann, Magnus Poulsen and Alec Dawson completed the event sweep for NSU and were .08 seconds off a championship meet record with their winning time of 3:12.08.
- Maslova earned her second silver of the meet in the 400 IM, recording an NCAA B-Cut time of 4:19.10.
- Brettman posted an NCAA A-Qualifying time of 3:48.81 in the men's 400 IM, earning second place. Spencer Hohm finished in 3:54.57, good enough for fourth place.
- Johns earned her first individual gold of the meet in the women's 100 butterfly, posting a time of 55.17. Elizabeth Zubero grabbed the silver with her personal-best time of 55.20 and Maslova finished fourth in 55.46. All three times were NCAA B-Cuts.
- The Sharks went 1-2-3 in the men's 100 fly as Averchenko took the gold in 47.30, Magnus Poulsen with the silver in 47.33 and Matteo Masiero earning the bronze in 48.26.
- Sundstedt took the silver in the women's 200 free with a time of 1:49.32.
- Vincent Lijoi and Dawson finished in second and third, respectively, in the men's 200 free, posting times of 1:38.00 and 1:38.34. Both times were NCAA B-Cuts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The 400 IM saw two Sharks post personal bests, Hannah Pariseault in 4:27.03 and Spender Hohm in 3:52.92, sending them both to the championship finals later that night. Both times were NCAA B-Cut times.
- In the women and men's 100 butterfly, the Sharks took the first, second and third seeds heading into the championships on both sides, as all six swimmers posted NCAA B-Cuts and three recorded personal bests.
- The NSU women sent a meet-best seven swimmers to the finals in the 200 freestyle, with three in the championship and four in the consolation finals. Solana Capalbo, Maeve Hunt and Tyler Fell each posted personal bests.
BEYOND THE MEDALS:
- In the prelims alone, the Sharks tallied 16 NCAA B-Standard times.
- Out of those who qualified for the Championship or Competition Finals, nine Sharks posted personal bests during preliminaries.
- During the finals, seven Sharks posted personal bests.
UP NEXT:
The four-day SSC Championship meet will continue tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 15. The preliminaries will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the finals are set to start at 6:00 p.m.
