NSU Volleyball Sweeps Day One at Triton Invite

HUNTSVILLE, Al. – The Nova Southeastern University Sharks Volleyball team began play at the Triton Invite in St. Petersburg with a 3-2 victory against the University of Indianapolis and a 3-0 victory over Bowie State University.

How it Happened
GAME 1

  • The first set began with the Sharks in a quick deficit, trailing 2-0. 
  • Brantley Chipley got the Sharks on the board with kill, shortly after a service ace by Brooke Spurgeon evened the score 3-3. 
  • Olivia Aniol recorded three straight points for the Sharks with a pair of solo blocks, pushing the score to 8-6 in favor of the Greyhounds. 
  • Coming out of the Sharks first timeout, Taylor Stockman, Brantley Chipley, and Olivia Aniol each tallied points to cut the Greyhounds lead to 14-10. 
  • Gabrielle Spankus and Taylor Stockman each put up a point to make the score 18-16 with the Greyhounds leading. 
  • The Sharks pushed the score to 20-19 with a service ace from Marley Navaretta
  • The Greyhounds remained in the lead, winning the first set 25-19. 
  • The second set began with a quick rally for the Sharks, getting out to a 3-0 lead with points from Gabrielle Spankus, Olivia Aniol, and Erika Spankus
  • A kill from Olivia Aniol brought the Sharks within a point of the Greyhounds with the score at 6-5. 
  • They Greyhounds took control of the second set, never relinquishing the lead and winning the set with a score of 25-11. 
  • The Sharks found themselves down 6-2 after a pair of service aces and an error. 
  •  Olivia Aniol tallied a pair of points with a solo block and a kill, making the score 6-4. 
  • The Sharks rallied with a 5-2 scoring run led by Taylor Stockman, cutting the Greyhounds lead to a point at 10-9. 
  • The two sides exchanged points through the middle of the set, pushing the score to 16-16. 
  • A 3-0 run for the Greyhounds forced a timeout from the Sharks bench, as the score hit 20-17 with the Sharks trailing. 
  • The Sharks fought back with points from Taylor Stockman and Madelyn Hooper, getting back within a point of the Greyhounds at 21-20. 
  • The Sharks were able to keep the set up for grabs with the score at 24-24, points coming from Cami Kelsay, Olivia Aniol, and Erika Spankus
  • The Sharks evened the set off an error in service by the Greyhounds. 
  • A service ace from Olivia Aniol put the Sharks at set point, Erika Spankus recorded the final point of the set as the Sharks won with a score of 27-25. 
  • The fourth set began with the Sharks needing to rally again, trailing 8-3. 
  • The Sharks put together a strong scoring run with points from Erika Spankus, Taylor Stockman, and Brooke Spurgeon, making the score 10-9 in favor of the Greyhounds. 
  • The Sharks offense began to take control of the set, going on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 18-11. Olivia Aniol and Taylor Stockman recorded seven points for the Sharks during the stretch. 
  • With a 7-1 closing run by Olivia Aniol, Cami Kelsay, Erika Spankus, and Taylor Stockman the Sharks took the fourth set, finishing with a score of 25-15. 
  • The fifth set started with alternating points as the score sat at 4-3 for the Greyhounds. 
  • The Sharks pulled even at 6-6 after kills by Erika Spankus and Abbie Roth
  • Cami Celsay, Olivia Aniol, and Taylor Stockman put the Sharks in the lead at 10-9. 
  • The two sides went back and forth until the Greyhounds took a 13-11 advantage. 
  • Abbie Roth evened the set at 13-13 with a service ace. 
  • Taylor Stockman recorded a pair of points as the Sharks closed out the match with a score of 16-14.

The Sharks took on Bowie State in their second match of the day.
