Sharks Battle Through Opening Weekend at Home

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern University baseball team opened up the 2026 season going 1-2, with a walk-off victory over Valdosta State, and losses to Catawba College and Wingate University.

How it Happened
  • The Sharks offense got off to a quick start off a double back Jack Cue and a walk drawn by Roy Quevedo, setting the table with runners at first and third.
  • Emilio Gonzalez drove in Jack Cue from third base on an error by the Blazers shortstop.
  • Nick Rodriguez singled to the right field gap to bring in a second run in the inning.
  • Dakota Jones drove in Emilio Gonzalez on a sacrifice fly to right field to pull the Sharks ahead 3-0 in the first inning.
  • Yhirian Marrero reached base on a hit by pitch to open the bottom of the second inning, advancing to second base on a wild pitch.
  • The Sharks starting pitcher Federico Zapata cruised through the first four innings of the game, holding the Blazers off the scoreboard on just four hits allowed.
  • Roy Quevedo drove in Yhirian Marrero with a line drive double down the left field line, putting the Sharks ahead 4-0 in the second inning.

How it Happened
  • The second game of the weekend was between the Sharks and the Catawba College Indians
  • The Indians took the opening score of the game on a single to left field, leading 1-0.
  • After allowing the run, Sharks starting pitcher Christopher Perez held the opposing lineup off the scoreboard through the sixth inning while striking out five through his start.
  • Coming out of the bullpen for the Sharks was Frank Billisi and Michael Alfonso who combined to hold the Indians to their lone run through the top of the ninth inning.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning Dakota Jones worked a leadoff walk to set the table for a comeback rally.
  • Michael Arnold came off the bench as a pinch hitter and reached base on a hit by pitch, following the first two batters of the inning reaching Ty Torti dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position.
  • With two outs in the inning, Jack Cue worked a walk to load the bases.
  • Roy Quevedo tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning after working a bases loaded walk and bringing in Dakota Jones.

How it Happened
  • In the third game of the weekend the Sharks squared off with the Wingate University Bulldogs.
  • The Bulldogs took the first runs of the game, scoring twice on a wild pitch and a stolen base.
  • With one out in the bottom of the third inning Jack Cue launched his first homerun of the season to bring the score to 2-1.
  • The Bulldogs continued to add runs through the middle innings, pushing their lead to 13-1 after the top of the seventh inning.
  • Sebastian Garavito got the Sharks back on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, as the Sharks trailed 13-2.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning Sebastian Garavito came to the plate with Brandon Mon and JC Hernandez on the bases, Garavito slashed a line drive down the left field line to plate both runs, taking the score to 14-4.
  • The Sharks dropped the game to the Bulldogs with a final score of 14-4.
