2015-16 Men's and Women's Sunshine State Conference Championships
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's golf team finished in second place while the men ended in sixth at the completion of the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon.
The Shark women had a stirring comeback that saw them shoot the lowest score of any team during any day of the tournament, falling only four shots short of the winners. Four of the squad's five finished among the top 12 golfers in the event. The men finished in a bunch-up middle of the pack with two individuals in the top 20.
With a 303 on Tuesday, led by four shooting 77 or better, the women moved up two slots on the leaderboard and came in only behind Rollins.
Aldana Foigel (Fr., Plottier, Argentina) had a 76 for a 232 total and fifth place overall.
Sophie Madden (Fr., Essex, England) slotted seventh at 235, nine strokes better to wrap with a 2-over 74. One behind her was
Michelle Ruiz (So., Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) with a final round 77 and eighth-place showing, and
Jamie Freedman (So., Miami Beach, Fla.) shot lower for the third straight day, with a 76 placing her 12th at 238.
Mailen Domecq Chantry (So., Mar del Plata, Argentina) ended at 250.
The men's top finisher was
Richard Mansell (Jr., Staffordshire, England), a model of consistency with his third straight 76 to close in 11th place.
Santiago Gomez (Sr., Armenia, Colombia) ended his final SSC Championship round with a 76 as well, and a 233 total for 19th.
Juan Jose Guerra (Fr., Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Hunter O'Mahony (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.) came in amongst those tied for 25th at 238 while
Priyanshu Singh's (So., Delhi, India) 242 put him 31st.
Lynn won both the team and individual titles on the men's side, by 12 over Saint Leo, and Manuel Torres topping teammate Martin Cancino and two others (Ryan Gendron of SLU and Barry's Niclas Weiland) by two for medalist honors. The top scorer on the women's side was Marie Coors of Saint Leo, shooting 223 to runner-up and teammate Vilde Eriksen's 229.
Both the NSU men and women will learn their further postseason fate in the coming days, via official releases on NCAA.com. The announcement of the men's pairings for the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional will come this Friday, estimated at 6 p.m., while the women will have their NCAA South Super Regional field revealed next Monday, April 25, at approximately 3 p.m.
