FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 20, 2007) - It was a battle of Jennifers on Saturday evening as Havens of Nova Southeastern (5-12, 4-3) outscored Tamilio of Florida Tech (14-3, 6-1) 29-25. While Havens won the battle, the Panthers won the war, beating NSU by a score of 79-61 at the University Center Arena.
Early on, NSU held a 10-8 lead after a couple of free throws by Jennifer Havens (Sr., Ontario, Ore.) but the Panthers would go on a 16-0 run, capped by made layup by Cassell Russell. Florida Tech would finish the half on a 34-20 run.
In the opening frame, the Panthers shot 53.1 percent from the field on 17-32 from the field, including 10 points from Tech guard Jennifer Tamilio. While the Panthers jumped out to their 42-28 halftime lead, Havens quietly scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards.
In the second half, NSU started on an 8-2 run but would only get as close six points before Tech broke the game open for the 18-point victory.
For the game, Havens finished with a career-high 29 points and nine rebounds while Tamilio scored 25 points and made four steals. Havens' total including a dazzling 13-14 effort from the free throw line while Tamilio shot 3-7 from behind the arc.
Kristin Hemminger scored 14 points for Tech while Eliza Allen (So., Hegenheim, France) added 11 for the Sharks.
For the game, the Panthers shot 51.7 percent from the field while NSU shot 42.9. Florida Tech outscored NSU in the paint 36-16 while the Panthers' bench outscored the Sharks' bench, 39-2.
NSU will be back in action on Wednesday, January 24 as they host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at 7:30pm in a non-conference game at the University Center Arena.
