Amber Bishko's Dominating Performance Lifts Sharks Over Surging Buccaneers

Amber Bishko
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (January 29, 2007) - Down 42-41, forward Jennifer Havens (Sr. Ontario, Ore.) hit a jump shot over two defenders with 48 seconds left to give Nova Southeastern (7-13, 5-4 SSC) the lead for good over the Barry Buccaneers (10-8, 6-3) in a 47-42 upset win on Monday night.

In the first half, Barry guard Sandra Jansson hit a three ball to open the scoring but after a free throw by Havens, the game would not see another basket until 14:58 remaining in the opening frame when Amber Bishko (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) hit a jumper to tie the game at three apiece.

The game would continue to go back in forth in a half that featured six ties and eight lead changes. Despite 13 NSU turnovers in the half, Bishko would send both teams into the locker room tied at 23 two free throws.

In the half, NSU shot 44.4 percent from the field while they held the Bucs to 32 percent on eight of 25, including 5-13 from downtown. Bishko scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds while Eliza Allen (So., Hegenheim, France) scored nine points on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

In the second half, Barry started on a 5-0 run, capped by a Princess Bailey jumper with 18:11 remaining but would not make another field goal for nearly ten minutes. Meanwhile, NSU would go on a 13-7 run, including three baskets by Havens.

With NSU up 33-30, Bailey hit a three-pointer for the eighth tie of the game. Two more threes by Allen and a jumper by Bishko gave the Sharks their largest lead at that point in the game at 41-37 with 3:31 left.

With 3:07 remaining, Bailey would hit another three-pointer followed by a tip-in by forward Christina Thompson to give Barry a 42-41 lead.

On the next possession, Bishko missed a three after hesitating but Allen got the board allowing NSU to reset. With Bishko taking charge, she found Havens on the right wing and with a defender already on her and Bucs center Alex Fernander flying out to her, Havens knocked down the jumper to seal the victory.

For the game, NSU shot 42 percent from the field and held the Bucs to 31 percent. Bishko, who played all 40 minutes in the game, finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Allen poured in 15 points, all from beyond the arc. Havens added nine points, putting her 58 away from 1,000 for her career.

The game featured eight ties and 15 lead changes as the Sharks and Bucs have split the regular-season series.

NSU will be back in action on Wednesday, January 31 as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take on the Florida Southern Moccasins at 5:30pm.
