Aly Hassan (Fr., Weston, Fla.) scored two goals in 12 and a half minutes, including the game-winner coming in the 90th minute as the Sharks (10-5-1, 4-3-1 SSC) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Florida Tech Panthers (3-9-2, 2-5-1) by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Rick Stottler Field.
By virtue of the victory, NSU clinched a spot in the Sunshine State Conference tournament.
Romain Onteniente (So., Nice, France) opened the scoring in the 17th minute, taking a loose ball and slotting it under Panthers goalkeeper Cory Collins to give NSU a 1-0 lead that would hold up going into the half.
In the second half, Carl Sullivan equalized for the Panthers, lofting a ball over NSU keeper Jarod Rennick (Sr., Allen, Texas) in the 48th minute.
Things looked bleak for the Sharks in the 67th minute when Nicolas Garcia gave Tech the lead after a shot from the top of the 18 found the back of the net.
The Sharks would come back furiously, however, as Hassan scored the first of his two goals, heading a Juan Gonzalez (Fr., Oakland Park, Fla.) free kick past Collins to equalize the contest in the 77th minute.
Two and a half minutes later, Onteniente would take a corner kick from the left corner and his inswinger was promptly headed in by Hassan, sealing the victory for the Sharks with 57 seconds left.
Hassan now has 11 goals and a team-leading five game winning goals on the campaign.
For the game, Florida Tech outshot NSU 17-12 but the Sharks held an 8-3 corner kick advantage, including 7-0 in the second half. Offsides were even at three apiece while fouls were nearly even at 11-10 in favor of the Sharks.
The Sharks will conclude the regular season on Friday, October 26 as they will host the Flagler Saints at 5pm at the NSU Soccer Complex. Before the game, NSU will recognize the career goalkeeper Jarod Rennick, the lone senior on the NSU side.
