NSU Men's Soccer Battles No. 10 Lynn to Double-OT Draw; Fall in Penalty Kick Shootout in SSC Tournament Semifinal

After Gutsy 110 Minute Effort, Sharks Edged by Host Fighting Knights

BOCA RATON, Fla. (November 2, 2007) - The NSU men's soccer team (12-5-2) battled the No. 10 ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights (15-1-1) to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods, in a Sunshine State Conference Men's Soccer Championship semfinal match on Friday afternoon at Lynn's McCusker Sports Complex.

The draw was settled with a penalty kick shootout, which Lynn won by a 4-2 margin. Both teams are credited with a tie in their overall record, but Lynn advanced to Sunday's SSC Championship game versus the University of Tampa.

The man of the match for Nova Southeastern was senior goalkeeper Jarod Rennick (Allen, Texas), who made 11 saves and held the high-powered Lynn attack at bay. The Sharks back line played extremely well, especially after starting left back Christian Benitez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was injured in the opening minute and was lost for the balance of the match.

Lynn controlled the run of play, outshooting the Sharks 25-3 and holding a 15-1 advantage in corner kicks. Lynn had several golden opportunities including a free kick from 20-yards out in the second half, but midfielder Darryl Gordon (Fr. Miami, Fla.) elevated to the top left corner of the goal and headed Lee Porters attempt over the crossbar.

NSU's best opportunity came in the last minute of regulation when SSC Player of the Year Romain Onteniente (So., Nice, France) broke in behind the Knights defense with a run from midfield, but slotted the ball just wide of the left post. Onteniente had earlier tested Lynn 'keeper Tim Melia with NSUs only shot on goal, on a first half set-piece.

NSU will await the NCAA Regional Tournament selections, which will be announced next Monday, in hopes of extending their outstanding 2007 campaign.
