NSU Women's Basketball Comes From Behind to Defeat No. 23 Shaw

Stephanie Sarosi Scores Career-High 26 Points; Sharks Erase 19-Point Second Half Deficit

Eliza Allen
RALEIGH, N.C. (December 15, 2007) - Trailing 52-39 with 15:30 remaining in the game, the Nova Southeastern Sharks (4-3) went on a 30-15 run to close out an improbable second half comeback against the 23rd-ranked Shaw Lady Bears (5-4) on Saturday night at Shaw's C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Sharks appeared to be shell-shocked early on as the Lady Bears used a tenacious pressure defense to jump out to a 26-10 lead with 10:43 remaining in the first stanza. As would be the case all night, NSU would battle back to cut Shaw's lead to 26-21. Stephanie Sarosi (So., Mims, Fla.) and Amber Bishko (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) sparked the run with consecutive jumpers while a made free throw by Christine Haber (Sr., Libertyville, Ill.) capped the run. Behind Jamie Goshen, however, the Lady Bears would close out the half up 43-32. Goshen scored 22 of her game-high 31 points in the first half on 6-of-12 shooting, including four made threes.

NSU shot 40 percent from the field in the first half while Shaw shot 39.5 percent. The Lady Bears were credited with nine steals while NSU blocked four shots.

In the second half, back-to-back layups by Sarosi and Abbie Tepe (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) trimmed the deficit to 15 with 14:26 left but layups by Nicky Souter and NaKeisha Anthony kept the Sharks at bay.

With 7:37 remaining, the NSU head coach Marilyn Rule was assessed a technical foul. After Anthony hit one of the two ensuing free throws, however, Sarosi and Bishko reeled off eight unanswered points, making it a 65-60 game with 5:03 remaining. Over the next three minutes, Nova Southeastern made it a one-point game on a fastbreak layup by Ashley Wilson (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.) with 1:56 left.

Any chance Shaw had of winning the game faded for good when Eliza Allen (Jr., Hegenheim, France) knocked down a three from the left wing with 1:20 left, giving NSU its first lead of the game, 69-67.

Sarosi scored on the next possession and Bishko made good on a pair of free throws while the Sharks' defense forced two key turnovers in the final minute, en route to the thrilling 73-69 win.

Sarosi led the Sharks with a career-high 26 points on 13-of-15 shooting while Allen and Bishko added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Shaw's Goshen led all scorers with 31 points.

NSU shot 44 percent from the field while holding Shaw to 36 percent. NSU outrebounded Shaw 50-37. Wilson and Anthony led their respective teams with nine rebounds each.

NSU will return to action on Monday, December 17 as it closes out its trip to North Carolina with a visit to Saint Augustine College at 6pm.
