MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (December 29, 2007) - NSU center Stephanie Sarosi (So., Mims, Fla.) recorded her third consecutive double-double, scoring 12 points and adding a career-high 21 rebounds while guard Tara Haddock (So., Citrus Springs, Fla.) added a career-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in just 14 minutes of play as the Nova Southeastern Sharks (6-4) defeated the Shaw Lady Bears (5-7) by a score of 63-52 on Saturday afternoon in day two of the Barry Holiday Classic at Barry's Health and Sports Center.
Sarosi's 21 boards broke an NSU Women's Basketball single-game record set by Jessie Pate on February 6, 2001 when she accumulated 19 rebounds. NSU's win over Shaw gives them two wins against the Lady Bears this season after trailing the all-time series, 4-0, coming into the 2007-08 campaign.
The two teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm early as they combined to go 0-for-7 with two turnovers at the outset. The first points of the game did not come until 2:43 into the game when Shaw's Jamie Goshen, who scored 31 points in the teams' first meeting two weeks ago, hit a three pointer.
The teams would continue their shooting woes scoring a combined 50 points in the half. The Sharks led 24-21 with 1:02 left in the first stanza but a jumper by Shaw's Nicky Souter and a three by Taneisha McGaughey at the buzzer gave the Lady Bears a 26-24 lead going into halftime.
In the first half, the teams combined to go 20-for-69 from the field, good for 28.9 from the field. McGaughey led all scorers with 10 points while Souter led all players with seven rebounds. Sarosi and Christine Haber (Sr., Libertyville, Ill.) led the Sharks with six points each while Sarosi and LaShawnna Edwards (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) had five rebounds each. Abbie Tepe (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio), who had six steals, led a Shark defense that forced 19 first half turnovers.
The story of the second half was NSU's ability to find its offensive rhythm and Shaw's continual struggles from the field. The Lady Bears were able to build a 33-27 lead with 17:49 remaining after a jumper in the paint from Ari Cureton. A made three by Ashley Wilson (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.), however, would lead the Sharks on a 32-18 run to build a 59-51 lead with 3:08 remaining. Shaw closed the gap to 59-52 with 2:32 left but Eliza Allen (Jr., Hegenheim, France), as she did against Shaw two weeks ago today, iced the game with a dagger beyond the arc with 2:02 remaining en route to the 63-52 victory.
In the second half, NSU shot 41.4 percent from the field while Shaw only shot 18.6 on 8-of-43 shots from the field. For the game, the Sharks shot 32.8 percent to Shaw's 24.3. While McGaughey led the Lady Bears in the second half with nine points, NSU got eight points from Allen, Wilson and Haddock.
Edwards finished with eight points and nine rebounds while Tepe finished the contest with eight points, six boards, four assists and seven steals. In addition, NSU outrebounded Shaw 57-50.
NSU will return to action on Monday, December 31 as it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic at 2pm at NSU's University Center Arena.
