Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (September 29, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team upended #9 Florida Southern College three games to one by the scores of 23-30, 30-28, 30-22, and 30-16 in action on Saturday afternoon inside the University Center. The win, NSU's program record 11th in a row, marks the first win in the 11 matches against Florida Southern and is also the highest ranked opponent the Sharks have even beaten in program history. With the win NSU improves to 16-4, including 6-0 in the Sunshine State Conference. Florida Southern falls to 13-6, 2-3 in SSC play.
Florida Southern controlled game one, defeating NSU 30-23. The Moccasins out-hit NSU .270 to .023 in the game. Middle Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) and opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) each had three kills to lead NSU while Florida Southern was led by Beverly Statis and Ashley Martin with four apiece.
The Sharks rebounded to win game two, 30-28. NSU had a match high 21 kills to hit .237. Florida Southern was held to .151. NSU setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) tallied 18 assists in the game and nine digs. Outside hitter Paola Ruiz (Fr., Rio Piedras, P.R.) recorded a game high seven kills for the Sharks while Stasis once again led Florida Southern with four.
NSU carried the momentum over into game three, at one time building a ten point lead, before winning 30-22. The Sharks hit .227 to .163 for the Moccasins. Petrova led the charge for NSU with four kills, ten assists and three digs. Danielle Durham led FSC with four kills.
Nova Southeastern dominated play in game four to put Florida Southern away, 30-16. NSU once led by 18 points in the game, helped by four kills from Carle and Gorman. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (So., Miami, Fla.) had a key role in the rout, serving four consecutive aces in the game for NSU.
For the match, NSU out-hit FSC .169 to .131. The Sharks had 12 more kills, seven more assists, six more aces, three more digs and 18 more points than Florida Southern in the win.
Carle led NSU with 13 kills in the match, followed by Tallman and Gorman with 12 and Ruiz with 11. Petrova put up five kills, 46 assists, and 19 digs. Kalish finished the match with five service aces and nine digs. Libero Kathleen Yony (Fr., Miami, Fla.) had a team high 14 digs for NSU.
Danielle Durham led FSC with 12 kills, followed by Stasis with 11.
"Today proved that there is not a team in the country that we can't hang with," said NSU head coach Steve Wilcosky.
