FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 9, 2008) - Nova Southeastern had five players score in double figures and outscored its opponent 51-17 in the second half en route to an 81-41 victory over Flagler College (3-12) on Wednesday evening at NSU's University Center Arena.
After a sluggish start, NSU built a 30-17 lead following a three-pointer by Eliza Allen (Jr., Hegenheim, France) with 2:14 left in the first half. Elizabeth Tuzzolo scored on a three at the buzzer, however, to send the two teams into the locker room with a 30-24 NSU lead.
Both teams struggled to shoot from beyond the arc in the first half, combining for a 3-for-15 effort in the frame. NSU scored 22 points in the paint against 12 for the Saints.
The story of the second half, however, was NSU's all-around team effort, offensively and defensively, as they shot 68 percent from the field in the half and held the Saints to 26 percent field goal shooting. Ashley Wilson (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.), who scored all 11 of her points in the second half, made back-to-back threes and went 3-for-3 from downtown and a layup in the first seven minutes of the half. The Sharks rode Wilson's hot hand to spark a 34-13 run, giving the Sharks a 64-37 lead with 8:35 remaining.
In the final 8:35, Flagler would go on to score two baskets the rest of the game, allowing the Sharks to coast to the 40-point victory. While NSU had five players in double figures, the Saints had none.
Stephanie Sarosi led all scorers with 20 points, 10 in each half, to go along with eight boards, four assists and three blocks. In addition to Wilson's 11 points, NSU had 10 each from Amber Bishko (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), Allen and LaShawnna Edwards (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.). Point guard Abbie Tepe (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) also added seven assists while Wilson and Allen had seven rebounds and five assists, respectively. NSU outrebounded Flagler 47-30 and outscored them 46-20 in the point.
"Tonight was a total team effort," NSU head coach Marilyn Rule said. "It's the type of win you're looking for as we go into the rest of our conference schedule. I think we found our identity tonight."
Led by Edwards' 10 points, NSU's bench outscored Flagler's 28-18.
"Our bench was solid tonight, which was huge. They did not have a let down near the end of the game," Rule added.
NSU will return to action on Saturday, January 12 as they host the Eckerd College Tritons in the first game of a conference doubleheader at NSU's University Center Arena.
