BOCA RATON, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University's women's basketball team was unable to hold off Lynn as the Sharks fell 72-62 in Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday at the de Hoernle Center. NSU now falls to 3-9 on the season and 0-3 in SSC play, while Lynn improves to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
During the first half, NSU made nearly half of their field goals from beyond the three-point line. Of the Sharks' 13 field goals, six came from downtown.
Trailing by four, Lindsey Newpher's (R-Jr., Depew, Okla.) three-point shot swished through the basket, sparking a 9-0 run that allowed NSU to make it a 16-11 game at the 10:45 mark.
The Sharks kept increasing their lead and eventually took a 13-point advantage with 4:07 remaining as an Eliza Allen (Hegenheim, France) trey put NSU up 29-16.
After a Madeleine Doyle made a layup for Lynn, NSU reeled off six-consecutive points in the pain with a Sarosi layup, a LaShawnna Edwards (Jr., Miami, Fla.) tip-in and a jumper from Newpher. Lynn's Jade Williams made a three-pointer in the final 15 seconds as the Sharks took a 35-21 lead heading into halftime.
Lynn began to rally in the first part of the second half. The Fighting Knights eventually evened the game up at 40-all with a Doyle jumper, while Williams' trey at 13:19 put Lynn ahead.
NSU eventually regained the lead, holding a slim one-point margin with a Newpher layup at 11:58. As a Crystal Ahmed layup returned the lead to the Fighting Knights, Stephanie Sarosi calmly sank her free throw at 10:15 to deadlock the game at 45-all.
However, the Fighting Knights took the lead for good on the next bucket as Chelsea Patterson's layup at 10:02 gave Lynn a 47-45 advantage.
The Sharks remained just a few points behind Lynn until a Patterson layup at 4:40 started a 9-3 run that resulted in the Fighting Knights taking a 64-54 advantage with 1:32. Lynn ultimately built an 11-point cushion as a pair of Patterson free throws made it 70-59 with 18 seconds left.
Lynn shot 34.3 percent (24-for-70) from the floor, while NSU was 31.9 percent (22-for-69). Lynn also held a 54-48 advantage in rebounds.
Sarosi led the Sharks with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Abbie Tepe (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in with 13 points.
Williams had a game-high 22 points, while Ahmed pulled down a team-high 11 boards.
NSU returns to the hardwood on Monday when the Sharks host Palm Beach Atlantic. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the University Center.
