MELBOURNE, Fla. (Oct. 17, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team spilt its regular season series against the Florida Tech Panthers when they lost, 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Melbourne, Fla.
The game turned out to be very similar to their first game this season as the Sharks (7-8-0, 2-4 SSC) and the Panthers (7-7-0, 2-4 SSC) were scoreless for the first 85 minutes. The first half was competitive, but the Sharks were the more active team on offense. Four out of their ten first half shots were on goal. They also prevented the Panthers from having a single shot on target.
The Sharks were still the more active team in the second half, but the Panthers found a way to get on the board. In the 86th minute, Stanly Abada scored a controversial unassisted goal that put the home team ahead. The Sharks argued a questionable call but were quickly penalized.
The Sharks had two opportunities to tie the game in the final minutes. Less than a minute after FIT's goal, Romain Onteniente (Sr., Nice, France) launched a solid shot but the ball just barely missed the goal and bounced off the post. Onteniente took another shot with less than a minute remaining but missed wide and to the right. To cap off the win, the Panthers' Robert Russell scored off a rebound in the final seconds of play.
Overall, the Sharks were the more active team but could not take advantage of their opportunities. They outshot the Panthers, 22-14, and had two more shots on goal. Tempers flared Saturday as the referees gave out 11 total cards. Seven different Sharks were cautioned but none were ejected.
The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team will return home this Wednesday, Oct. 21 to take on No. 2 Tampa at 7 p.m.
