WINTER PARK, Fla. (Nov. 28, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University women's basketball lost 75-57 to No. 13 Clayton State on Saturday afternoon at Warden Arena in the Rollins Thanksgiving Classic. With the loss, NSU falls to 4-2 on the season, while Clayton State improves to 3-0.
NSU took control of the first 15 minutes of the opening half. Lindsey Newpher (Sr., Depew, Okla.) nailed a three-pointer and made a layup as the Sharks were up 5-0 at 18:43. Although Clayton State came back to even the game at 8-8 on a Teshymia Tillman layup, the Sharks quickly regained a five-point edge. Meloney Fosburgh (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) made a layup, drew a foul and sank her foul shot at 15:42. Then a Jada Buckner (So., Loudon, Tenn.) layup at 15:06 put the Sharks up 14-8
The Lakers eventually trimmed cut NSU's lead down to one with a Brittany Hall layup that made it 17-16 in favor of the Sharks. NSU maintained the advantage, going up 27-22 with Rheisa Burke (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) making a free throw with 6:56 left in the first half. However, Clayton State closed out the half with a 16-3 run en route to entering halftime with a 38-30 lead.
Clayton State's momentum carried over into the second half. After the Lakers took a 10-point lead early in the second half, Fosburgh hit a pair of foul shots at 18:18 and made another foul shot at 17:44 to bring the Sharks to within seven. However, that would be the closest NSU could get for the remainder of the game as Clayton State pull away. The Lakers held several 16 and 17-point leads and eventually took their largest 18 points with 35 seconds left in the game. Jene'e Jemison sank a foul shot that gave Clayton State the 75-57 lead, which proved to be the final score.
The Sharks shot 41.3 percent and were 19-for-46 from the floor. Clayton State, who shot 50.0 percent in the first half, was 26-for-54 from the floor and shot 48.1 percent. Clayton State also held a 33-27 edge in rebounding.
Fosburgh led the team with a career-high 16 points and six rebounds. Newpher added 11 points, which tied her career-high.
Tillman scored a game-high 19 points. Latonda Bruce had 12 points, while Brenna Fort and LaDe'Sha Stoudamire each had 10 points. Bruce and Fort pulled down seven rebounds a piece.
NSU is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 5 when the Sharks host Saint Leo in what will be the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at The Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
