WINTER PARK, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2009) - Cold shooting in the second half plague the Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team as the Sharks fell 73-53 to No. 21 Rollins in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday at Warden Arena at the Alfond Sports Center.
After both teams went scoreless during the first two minutes of play, Rollins jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 17:07 mark. However, NSU fought back and pulled to within one off a three-pointer by Erin Zampell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) to make it a 10-9 game in favor of the Tars with 14:34 to go.
Rollins was able to build a several four-point leads, including a 17-13 advantage off an Ines Teuma jumper at 9:25. The Sharks made it a one-point lead once again as Stephanie Sarosi (Jr., Mims, Fla.) swished a three-point shot with 9:12 remaining.
However, the Tars used a 12-2 run over the next six minutes to go up by nine as a Jessica Pressley trey made it 29-20 with 2:33 left in the half. After Eliza Allen (Sr., Hegenheim, France) hit a three to cut the Sharks' deficit to six, an 8-2 run by the Tars allowed Rollins to take a 37-25 advantage heading into halftime.
NSU had to contend with Rollins' hot-shooting to start the second half as the Tars hit four of their five shots from beyond the arc and used a 16-5 run to go up 53-32 at the 13:10 mark.
Rollins ultimately took a 22-point lead, but the Sharks had a 10-2 run that was bookend by Sarosi layups to make it 59-45 with 7:13 remaining.
However, behind a 14-2 run, the Tars went up by 26 points as two Kourtnie Berry free throws at 3:16 made it a 73-47 game. NSU would go on to score six more points all from Jennifer Céant in the final 1:56.
Rollins was 43.5 percent (27-for-62) from the floor, while NSU was 35.2 percent (19-for-54). The Tars also had more rebounds (44-28).
Sarosi led the Sharks with 26 points and seven rebounds.
Jessica Pressley had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Tars.
NSU is back in action on Wednesday when the Sharks are at rival Barry. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
