FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University's women's basketball team closed out the home portion of its regular season schedule in record-breaking fashion as the Sharks downed Florida Tech 78-57 on Wednesday on Senior Night at the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
As a team, NSU grabbed a single-game record 62 rebounds, one more than the previous season-high of 61 set on Feb. 13, 2001 against Palm Beach Atlantic.
Individually, Stephanie Sarosi (Jr., Mims, Fla.) became the program's single-season points leader. Entering into the game, Sarosi needed just nine points to break Jessica Pate's single-season mark of 531 set during the 2003-04 season. Sarosi broke Pate's record with a jumper at 3:07 in the first half. Sarosi went on to score 24 points, bringing her career total to 546. She has now scored 20+ points in the last five games.
NSU set the tone of the game early on as the Sharks got a nine-point lead off a Stevie Kamp (Fr., Mesa, Ariz.) jumper at 14:05 to go up 14-5. Florida Tech ultimately cut NSU's lead down to six with a jumper from Kristen Dixon at 8:47 to make it a 17-11 game. However, the Sharks used an 11-2 that was capped by an Abbie Tepe (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) three-point that gave NSU the 28-13 advantage.
NSU got up to a 16-point lead - its largest of the first half - with a Sarosi jumper at 1:18. The Sharks eventually entered halftime with a 35-21 advantage.
The Sharks offense continued throughout the first part of the second half as the Sharks led by as many as 27. A Kamp jumper at 9:39 provided NSU with the 59-32 advantage. The Panthers were able to trim NSU's lead down to 15 on three occasions, with the final time coming with an Amanda Deveaux three-pointer at 55 seconds remaining to make it a 72-57 game.
NSU pushed its lead up to 19 points twice in the final 45 seconds. A three-pointer by Lauren Marshall (So., Gladstone, Mich.) made it a 76-57 game. Meanwhile, Lindsey Newpher (RS-Jr., Depew, Okla.) had the game's final points with a layup with seven seconds remaining.
NSU was 40.0 percent from the field, going 28-for-70, and also had 24 assists. Florida Tech shot 25.0 percent (16-for-64) and totaled 34 rebounds and eight blocks.
In addition to her 24 points, Sarosi also pulled down a game-high 16 boards. Meanwhile, Abbie Tepe dished out a career-high 10 assists, just one shy of tying Marvelous Washington's single-game mark.
Lynisha Nelson led the Panthers with 10 points.
NSU concludes the regular season on Saturday at Florida Southern. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
