FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team earned its first conference win by taking down the Florida Southern Mocs (1-6-0, 1-2-0 in the Sunshine State Conference), 3-0 Wednesday night at the NSU Soccer Complex. After losing on opening night, the Sharks (6-4-0, 1-2-0 in the SSC) have won five straight home matches.
The Sharks started slow in the first half and did not take a shot until the 18th minute. They made their first shot count when Aly Hassan (Jr., Weston, Fla.) scored the game winning goal. Darryl Gordon's (Jr., Miami, Fla.) pass was the key to the score as he put the ball over the defense, setting up Hassan for the easy goal. The Sharks finished the half with seven shots, five of which were on goal.
Hassan struck again six minutes into the second half. Brad Randolph (Jr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) earned his second assist of the season with his pass to Hassan who was 25 feet away from the box on the left side. Hassan broke his defender's ankles and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for the second time. It was Hassan's fifth goal of the season. He now leads the Sharks in goals, shots on goal (21), and points (11).
The Sharks capped the night off with a goal in the 61st minute. Mocs' goalkeeper Paul DiPalma made a risky play for the ball and Gordon made him pay. He kicked the ball passed the goalkeeper and put the ball into the wide open net from eight yards out on the left side of the goal. It was Gordon's third goal of the season, tying his career high.
It was an offensively efficient night for the Sharks as nine of their 17 shots were on goal. They also held Florida Southern to eight shots with only two on goal. Goalkeeper Lyle Howe (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) is now 2-0 with two shutouts in his short career at Nova.
The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team will return to action this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. to take on Embry-Riddle at the NSU Soccer Complex.
